YesAsia Editorial Description

Five years in the making and starring some of Asia's biggest stars, Wong Kar Wai's 2046 is not merely a film but a cultural event of 2004. With a cast featuring Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Carina Lau, Faye Wong, Chang Chen and Kimura Takuya, one cannot deny the star power in this project, but the spotlight is really on director Wong. His usual collaborators such as production designer and editor William Chang and cinematographer Christopher Doyle are back on board for this ride into a world that only Wong Kar Wai can conjure. Is 2046 a hotel room number? A train to the future? A memory? The year before China's promise of 50 years of self-governance for Hong Kong expires? In many ways, it is all of the above, but also none of the above. Like all previous Wong films, it is the journey, and not the destination that matters, and all the individuals in his film are haunted not by the fear of the future but by the pain of the past.

Loosely a sequel to Wong's previous In the Mood for Love, Tony Leung once again plays a writer named Chow Mo Wan, but he is nothing like the Chow Mo Wan from the previous film. Now Chow is a womanizer who writes softcore stories to sustain his boozing habits. He carries on relationships with various women: Black Spider (Gong Li), whose real name is the same as Maggie Cheung's character in In The Mood for Love; Mimi (Carina Lau, reprising a previous Wong Kar Wai role); Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong), the daughter of the motel owner who is in love with a Japanese man (Kimura Takuya); and callgirl Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi), a resident of room 2046 with whom he shares an illicit affair.

Is Chow Mo Wan a completely different character existing in a parallel world to In the Mood for Love, or is he the same character but now completely destroyed by a failed romance? With Chang's luscious art direction, Doyle's stunning cinematography, a hypnotic soundtrack by Peer Raben and Umebayashi Shigeru, and stunning performances from the cast, 2046 is the latest masterpiece from auteur Wong Kar Wai. The story is presented to you, and it's up to you to find its meaning.

In the wake of a broken life Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
2046 is the story of a writer who is chained to a lost love. Shackled to the past, the man is unable to open himself to the women he subsequently encounters.

Wong Kar Wai paces the movie well and the screen is filled with indelible images. While the opening scenes seem a confusing jumble, as the story unspools all the pieces begin to fall together and unfold as an engrossing tale.

Tony Leung, Faye Wong, Gong Li, and Carina Lau all give effective performances, but the movie really belongs to Zhang Ziyi, whose beauty and energy are simply stunning. Very highly recommended by your humble servant for mature viewers.

Well.... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Maybe i am not into this kind of film. I got it because i knew this film many awards in various festival. Tony Leung plays a writer who fell in love with a woman in room 2046 only to learn that she died, nevertheless, he continued to write the story using her as an inspiration. Too deep for me...i really have a hard time.

Putting life in perspective Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Despite earlier reviews - that the movie was slow and the plot confusing - when it was first released, I totally get the story. Perhaps it is only after a certain age and with some life experience can one fully realise how one cannot escape from the past and yet one can never go back to what was before. While struggling to find ourselves again, we miss or lost the moment that is in the present, which is what the movie successfully conveyed.

Not bad...I guess... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
So this movie was good, acting was great, but the sotry was a little silly. The visuals were fantastic, and it was amaginative, but not up to the standards of the actors in this film, (i.e.-gong li has many better films). Ziyi Zhang stands out in this movie if only for the reason that she has the most screen time of the major actresses which allows her to express more feelings. Good movie but could have been great.

Where is the Cantonese version of this movie? I can't find it. I can't rate it yet since I haven't seen it. Since this movie got so many rewards, I'll give it a 10.
