Ding Sheng remakes John Woo's seminal A Better Tomorrow for a new generation! Wang Kai (Suspect X) and Darren Wang (Our Times), both of whom appeared in Ding's Railroad Tigers, plus television star Ma Tianyu (Ice Fantasy) step into updated versions of the roles made famous by Ti Lung, Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung. A Better Tomorrow 2018 pays homage to the original with plentiful references in the music and action sequences, while also giving its own spin to the classic crime action tale of bullets and brotherhood.

Kai (Wang Kai) runs a smuggling ring but keeps it a secret from his younger brother Chao (Ma Tianyu), who is a rookie police officer. Working alongside right-hand man Mark (Darren Wang), Kai abides by his own set of principles and refuses to touch the drug trade. This causes a rift with a former associate who lays a trap for him. In the ensuing fallout, Kai gets arrested by his own brother and sent to prison, and Mark cripples his leg while getting revenge for Kai. Three years later, Kai is released from prison and tries to start anew on the straight. However, Chao isn't ready to forgive him, and past foes return to threaten them.
