Tora finds his true love Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Tora-San's Heart of Gold", the 18th Tora-San film, is one of my favorite's in this great series. Tora returns to Shibamata from the road to find his sister and her husband in a conference with Mitsuo's teacher, Yagyu Masako (Dan Fumi). When Tora catches sight of the pretty young teacher, he intervenes and dominates the conversation with his usual foolishness.

Hiroshi is angered by Tora's interference because he wants to make sure that, unlike him, his son will go to college. Sakura tells Tora that it is ridiculous for him to be fawning over a woman as young as Miss Yagyu; he should be interested in women the age of Miss Yagyu's mother. Sakura's comments force Tora to confront his mortality for the first time and foreshadow what is to come.

After leaving Toraya in shame, Tora travels to Bessho, where he encounters a young actress (Okamoto Mari) and her wandering troupe of actors (previously seen in "Tora-San's Dream Come True"). Tora throws a big celebration for his old friends for which he is unable to pay. After Tora is arrested for bilking his hotel, Sakura has to travel to Bessho to bail out her brother. They return to Tokyo, where Tora meets Miss Yagyu's mother (Kyo Machiko, star of such classic films as "Rashomon" and "Ugetsu").

We quickly learn that Mrs. Yagyu (now a widow) and Tora grew up in the same neighborhood ... and that Tora had teased the violin-carrying schoolgirl. The cultured Mrs. Yagyu and Tora make the ultimate odd couple, but they swiftly bond. He admires her beauty, refinement, and good heart; she revels in Tora's good humor and zeal for life.

Has Tora finally stumbled upon his mate? While director Yamada Yoji probably ladles on the sentimentality a little too thickly near the end of this fine film, it is a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience, with loads of little humorous touches. I recommend "Tora-San's Heart of Gold" very, very highly.
