YesAsia Editorial Description
In addition to Fukatsu and Nishida, Mitani's latest all-star cast also includes Abe Hiroshi (Still Walking), Nakai Kiichi (Railways), Takeuchi Yuko (Be With You), Asano Tadanobu (Villon's Wife), as well as cameos by SMAP's Kusanaga Tsuyoshi, Sato Koichi (The Magic Hour), Oizumi Yo (Gegege no Kitaro), Fukada Kyoko (Yatterman), and Shinohara Ryoko (Unfair). A hilarious courtroom comedy with genuinely touching moments, Once in a Blue Moon spent four weeks at the top of the Japanese box office, and it's also one of the leading grand prize nominees at the 2012 Japan Academy Prize.
Emi (Fukatsu Eri) is passionate about being a lawyer, but her clumsiness has caused her to mess up one case after another. Finally, her boss Hayami (Abe Hiroshi) issues her an ultimatum: Win the next case, or lose her job. Her latest client is a timid man accused of murdering his wife (Takeuchi Yuko), and the only person who can support his alibi is the ghost of Rokubei (Nishida Toshiyuki), a samurai who's been dead for over 400 years. Realizing that she, too, has the ability to see Rokubei, Emi decides to make Rokubei the defense's key witness. But how will Emi convince the rest of the world that the ghost of a samurai is a credible witness?

Another instant classic from Mitani Koki
"A Ghost of a Chance" (a.k.a. "Once in a Blue Moon") is writer/director Mitani Koki's latest comic triumph. As with his previous films, Mitani succeeds by imbuing a wonderfully humane warmth into his humor, without ever making his story seem treacly. One leaves the film with an almost blissful feeling of good cheer. How many directors can pull that off?
Lawyer Emi (Fukatsu Eri) is the daughter of a renowned jurist, but, alas, she seems to have inherited none of her late father's legal skill. Instead, the frazzled Emi creates chaos wherever she goes. Her stern employer Hayami (Abe Hiroshi) gives her one last chance; she must defend Yabe Goro (Kan) against charges that he murdered his wife. There's one major problem for the defense: Goro's alibi is that he couldn't have committed the murder because, at the time of the killing, he was in a rustic hotel room trapped beneath the ghost of a vanquished samurai. Emi journeys to the remote hotel and begins to piece together what might have happened on that fateful night. Unfortunately, she misses the last bus back to Tokyo and so is stuck overnight in the dilapidated place. She chooses to spend the night in the room in which she suspects Goro stayed, only to find herself awakened by the ghastly spirit of Rokubei Sarashina (Nishida Toshiyuki)! Goro's alibi actually is true! But how in the world can hapless Emi prove to a skeptical court the truth of Goro's story, particularly since only a handful of people are capable of seeing this ancient ghost? Watching Emi's stumbling efforts to develop her defense case is comedic magic. The viewer naturally roots for underdog Emi; Fukatsu Eri does a splendid job of showing Emi strive to overcome her crippling lack of confidence. Nishida Toshiyuki charms as the long-dead samurai. Nakai Kiichi provides a steely counterweight as Goro's relentless prosecutor and Abe Hiroshi smartly humanizes his role as Emi's boss. "A Ghost of a Chance" should not be missed! |
