With the family drama A Love for Dilemma currently trending in China, now seems like a good time to revisit the acclaimed 2019 series that came before it, A Little Reunion. A Love for Dilemma, A Little Reunion and 2016's A Love for Separation are all family stories based on novels by Lu Yingong. All three are worthwhile watches, but A Little Reunion is the highest-rated on Douban for good reason.
A Little Reunion is centered around three families during a crucial period: the final year of high school when students prepare for the gaokao, China's all-important national college entrance exam. A Love for Separation's Huang Lei and Hai Qing return as parental figures of free-spirited, trouble-making son Yifan (Zhou Qi) and studious, introverted nephew Lei'er (Liu Jiahui). With Yifan constantly serving up good-natured chaos, the Fang family of four is a warm, rambunctious and relatable household that balances the good and the bad in supportive manner. In the same upper middle-class neighborhood, we have the Li family and the Qiao family. Wang Yanhui and Yong Mei are the stern father and gentle mother trying to repair relations with rebellious son Yangyang (Guo Zifan), who was mostly raised by his grandmother because of his father's responsibilities as a public official. Tao Hong and Sha Yi are the divorced couple who serve as the tiger mom and lax dad to smart, sensitive and stressed-out daughter Yingzi (Teresa Li). Each set of parents and each teen all have their own concerns and conflicts to deal with during this high-pressure time. Some are funny – mainly, anything involving Fang Yifan – and some are suffocating, like Yingzi trying to endure her mother's overbearing parenting. The different threads and relationships realistically capture the nature of family and friendship, and show the different challenges and perspectives of being a parent and being an adolescent. Carried by strong writing and empathetic performances, A Little Reunion simply tells ordinary and universal stories that connect. It's easy to see a little bit of our families, a little bit of our parents, and a little bit of ourselves in A Little Reunion. |
