Nakano Ryota, the director of Her Love Boils Bathwater and Capturing Dad, again explores the delicate dynamics of a family in A Long Goodbye. Based on a novel by Nakajima Kyoko, the drama chronicles the stages of Alzheimer's disease, and how an elderly man and his family cope with the progression. Like in his previous films, Nakano approaches a serious story with a lighter touch that highlights what's remembered and not what's lost. Yamazaki Tsutomu, Matsubara Chieko, Takeuchi Yuko and Aoi Yu form the family of four in A Long Goodbye.

In 2007, at the request of their mother (Matsubara Chieko), Mari (Takeuchi Mari) and Fumi (Aoi Yu) return home to see their father Shohei (Yamazaki Tsutomu) before his 70th birthday. That's when they learn that their father, a retired principal, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In the years that follow, Shohei's capacities gradually decline under the tender watch of his wife. Meanwhile, Mari, who lives in California with her husband and son, struggles to adapt to a foreign environment, and Fumi pursues her dreams without much success.
