YesAsia Editorial Description

Benny Chan (Gen-X Cops) directs A Moment of Romance, a classic triad romance beloved by Hong Kong audiences even years after its theatrical release! Andy Lau stars as triad boy Wah Dee, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he's selected to drive getaway on a jewel heist orchestrated by the vicious triad Trumpet (Tommy Wong). Things go wrong, and Wah Dee is forced to take rich student Jojo (Jacklyn Wu) hostage in order to make good their escape. Trumpet wants her dead to prevent her possible status as a witness, but Wah Dee won't have it. He chooses to let her live, a decision which affirms his morality, and earns Jojo's affection. But the triad underworld is ruthless and unforgiving. Love blossoms between Wah Dee and Jojo, but their love may not be long for this world...

A classic triad melodrama with an achingly tragic love story, A Moment of Romance made an instant star out of Jacklyn Wu, and provided star Andy Lau with possibly his most iconic screen role. Their famous motorcycle ride towards the end of the film is easily one of the most popular romantic images in all of Hong Kong Cinema, and would be parodied mercilessly in Andy Lau's 2000 hit Needing You. A Moment of Romance was followed by two unrelated sequels starring Jacklyn Wu, the third of which reunited her with Andy Lau.

Well-made triad romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"A Moment of Romance" is a beautifully-conceived romantic drama. Andy Lau plays Wah Dee, a triad gangster with a good heart. Wah Dee is asked to be the get-away driver in an armed robbery, but the scheme goes horribly wrong and Wah Dee ends up having to grab a hostage to protect himself when he flees. The hostage is a beautiful girl named Jojo (Jacklyn Wu), who is terrified by Wah Dee. However, her feelings for Wah Dee begin to change when he protects her from the other gang members who wish to kill her so that she cannot be a witness against them. From those beginnings grows a great Romeo-and-Juliet-style love story.

Andy Lau is a rakishly handsome leading man, somehow managing to convince us that his character who does such evil things (accomplice to an armed robbery; participating in a crazed truck race that puts the life of Jojo and others at risk; fighting in endless gang wars) somehow has a heart of gold. Jacklyn Wu, in her first screen role, makes a sweet-natured, but strong-willed leading lady. (Today is her 41st birthday; happy birthday, Jaclyn!) The supporting cast is excellent and the film is skillfully made, building to a wonderfully romantic climax. Your humble reviewer recommends "A Moment of Romance" very highly.

Cute Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Andy Lau is really good in this movie. No wonder this film won several awards.

I mostly liked the part when he was about to die, how the blood continously comes out of the nose is really puzzling me up to now. Nice film, worth a buy!!!

Just A 'Moment of Romance'?..suspend me in time! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I am a massive Andy Lau fan, but it doesnt mean that I like all of his movies! Some of them I hate and then some of them I love with a passion, as I do this one!!
What I like about the movie is the appeal for both male and female i.e. the action and violence for guys and the romance for the girls!
Now I don't speak chinese, but I could feel all the emotions that were in the film especially between the two lead characters. I found myself totally swept up in the story as though everything was really happening and the love that these two felt for each other. But as a modern day Romeo and Juliet they were doomed from the start. Not giving the end away, I cried for about 2 and a half hours, not even TITANIC could make me cry that much!
But the acting is superb and I think that this is one of Andy's finest performances and I would love if it could be seen by a larger audience because it deserves it. SO BUY THIS FILM!
