K-On! director Yamada Naoko and studio Kyoto Animation adapt Oima Yoshitoki's acclaimed manga A Silent Voice into a beautifully poignant animated feature about two lonely youths and their struggle for acceptance, redemption and friendship. In elementary school, Shoya cruelly bullies classmate Shoko, who is hard of hearing, to the point that she has to transfer away. After his actions come to light, the friends and classmates who had condoned his actions turn against him, and he becomes the outcasted one. Losing hope in life, Shoya begins to see all people with an "X" over their faces. A few years later, on the day he planned to kill himself, high schooler Shoya re-encounters Shoko. Carrying the guilt of his past, he tries to make amends with the shy girl and forge an unlikely friendship.
