YesAsia Editorial Description

In life, there are some very special people who enter your life for a brief time and leave memories that will last a lifetime. Yokomichi Yonosuke is such a person. Based on the award-winning novel by Yoshida Shuichi, The Story of Yonosuke chronicles a year in the life of a very special young man through the perspectives of those he touched. Kora Kengo (Norwegian Wood) gives the performance of his career as the bright, cheerful and sometimes socially inept titular character. Director/co-scriptwriter Okita Shuichi drops the deadpan humor he used in The Chef of South Polar and Woodsman and the Rain with a genuinely touching film that's also a little bittersweet.

In 1987, 18–year–old Yokomichi Yonosuke (Kora Kengo) moves to Tokyo to attend university. His cheerful and earnest nature quickly helps him become friends with two classmates. His persistence and lack of tact help him bond with cool, fashionable Kato (Ayano Go). Through Kato, Yonosuke also meets Shoko (Yoshitaka Yuriko), an eccentric rich girl who falls head over heels for Yonosuke. From his friends' points of view, we see moments from what would become the most important year in Yonosuke's life, as well as the unforgettable memories that still live in his friends' minds over two decades later.

Product Information

Director: Shuichi Okita

It is 1987 – the zenith of Japan’s economic success – and eighteen-year-old Yonosuke Yokomichi has moved to Tokyo from Nagasaki.

Normal in every way possible, Yonosuke finds himself out of step with his seemingly more worldly counterparts at university. Despite his somewhat goofy exterior, Yonosuke befriends fellow freshmen Ippei Kuramochi and Yui Akutsu during the opening commencement ceremony. Together with his new friends he joins the samba club.

During lunch one day Yonosuke meets Kato, a handsome boy popular with the girls, and the two become good friends. Soon after, while taking driving class with Kato, Yonosuke meets Shoko, an eccentric rich girl who shows interest in Yonosuke. But Yonosuke hardly notices her advances. He is infatuated with a mysterious older woman named Chiharu who plays the plethora of rich men prevalent during the "bubble time" like pawns in a game of chess.

Sixteen years later, missing is the affable Yonosuke, who is said to have become a cameraman after college. Little does everyone know of the selfless tragedy that has befallen their "ordinary" friend.

A friend to remember
Imagine sitting down at a reunion with old friends from school. You chat about old memories, the embarrassing moments that you can finally laugh about now. Then, you realize that these moments all include a single person who isn't at the reunion for some reason.

Yokomichi Yonosuke is that person. At the beginning of Okita Shuichi's A Story of Yonosuke, Yonosuke (Kora Kengo) is a happy-go-lucky country boy who has moved up to Tokyo for university. From his first encounters with classmate Ippei, Yonosuke is clearly not another scared freshman in the big city for the first time. He's enthusiastic, friendly, a little naïve and a little KY (Kuuki Yomenai - as in unable to read the atmosphere of a social setting). However, he also becomes the man who brings together classmates Ippei and Yui, accepts his friend for being gay with no hesitation and charms the heart of spoiled heiress Shoko (Yoshitaka Yuriko).

Suddenly, Okita takes the story forward to 2012. We realize that the film is essentially a portrait of one year in Yonosuke's life, pieced together by memories of those he touched. A Story of Yonosuke isn't a sad film – it's actually quite effective as a dryly humorous character study – but it isn't the typical inspirational tearjerker about the value of friendship, either. By framing the narrative using a series of flashbacks, the film suggests that these people who were blessed by Yonosuke's acts of kindness never got a chance to repay that kindness. It's a fact that lends the entire film a strong bittersweet feeling, even in comedic moments towards the end of the film.

Known for deadpan comedies like Antarctic Chef and The Woodsman and the Rain, Okita's sensibility has matured quite a bit with only his fourth film. Working from a script co-written by Maeda Shiro and himself, the director handles Yonosuke's awkwardness with perfect timing and moves the ambitious narrative at just the right pace. Antarctic Chef and Woodsman established Okita as a new talent to watch, but Yonosuke elevates him to a new level.

At 160 minutes, A Story of Yonosuke is a long journey. It moves at a leisurely pace, its emotions are relatively muted and it doesn't have a lot in terms of traditional cinematic thrills. However, it's a memorable dramedy that will make you appreciate the friends you have in life and make you long for the friends you've lost.
