YesAsia Editorial Description

The Front Line director Jang Hoon revisits the brutal history behind Korea's journey to democracy in his fourth feature A Taxi Driver. Selected as Korea's Oscar candidate for Best Foreign Language Film, the historical action drama is based on a real-life story that took place during the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, which played an important role in the development of Korean democracy. Song Kang Ho (The Age of Shadows) portrays a taxi driver who helps a German journalist expose the Korean government's brutal suppression of the democracy movement to the world. The actor was crowned Best Actor at various major film awards, including the 26th Buil Film Awards, the 21st Fantasia International Film Festival and the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards. Named the Best Film at the 54th Grand Bell Awards, the blockbuster drama is supported by a distinguished cast that includes German actor Thomas Kretschmann (Jungle), Ryu Jun Yeol (The King), Park Hyuk Kwon (The Mimic), Um Tae Goo (The Age of Shadows), Yu Hae Jin (Confidential Assignment) who won Best Supporting Actor at the 37th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Choi Gwi Hwa (The Outlaws) who won Best New Actor at the 17th Director's Cut Awards.

Tokyo-based German reporter Peter (Thomas Kretschmann) hears that an uprising is happening in Gwangju, South Korea, and sets off to investigate the incident, which is not being covered in Korean news. Man Seob (Song Kang Ho) is a widowed taxi driver who struggles to pay rent while taking care of his 11-year-old daughter. When he learns that a foreigner is offering a large sum of money for a taxi driver, Man Seob takes the job without hesitation and drives Peter from Seoul to Gwangju, not realizing that the besieged city is under lockdown. When they finally make it into Gwangju, Man Seob and Peter find themselves in the midst of a massive student-led demonstration and the government's violent crackdown.

Product Information

May 1980, A Seoul taxi driver named Man-seob (SONG Kang-ho) comes across an offer to good to be true. If he drivers a foreign passenger from Seoul down to Gwangju and back again before the curfew, he’ll be paid the unthinkable sum of 100,000 won – enough to cover several months of unpaid rent. Without stopping to ask the details, he picks up the German reporter Peter (Thomas Kretschmann) and sets off along the highway.

Although stopped by police roadblocks at the edge of Gwangju, man-seob is desperate to earn his taxi fare, and eventually manages to find a way into the city. There they encounter students and ordinary citizens taking part in large-scale demonstrations against the government. Man-Seob, alarmed by the danger in the air, pleads with Peter to go quickly back to Seoul. But Peter ignores him, and with the help of a university student Jae-sik (RYU Jun-yeol) and a Gwangju taxi driver named HWANG (YOO Hai-jin), begins shooting with his news camera. As time passes the more and more serious, and Man-seob keeps thinking of his young daughter at home all alone.
