Nature is forever our homeland Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
‘A Year in the Clouds’ is a very interesting 87 minutes documentary about an indigenous people living within the beautiful mountains of Taiwan in a village called Smangus. The good people are called the Tayal and are apparently the only people in Taiwan who live independently outside of any governmental system and have ownership of their land and homes. Twenty years previous the tribe were very poor, resulting in hard labour until their tribal leader had a dream vision of a massive tree that would aid their plight. The Tayal people then found Matsum, a cypress tree forest in the mountains in search of the great tree (which they also found), which gave the Smangus villagers much wealth with assisted eco-tourism from many interested visitors. The Tayal are very modern and Western influenced, they have computers, modern clothing fashions, but having self built their own schools, church and homes. Their strong concerns are for the natural environment and of sharing everything each have with their communities. The Tayal also have a Christian religion fused with a somewhat pagan belief of the spirits of the earth, especially the giant 1,000 year old tree which the Tayal protect to ensure their land has good seasonal crop prosperity that connects its blessing to their locale ecology.

This DVD documentary shows a snapshot of some of the Tayal people’s lives throughout one whole year - the joy (and pain) of a young girl giving birth to her new baby girl at harvest time; a marriage ceremony of a Vietnamese girl who marries one of the men of the Tayal; the pain of their sick elder hospitalized for cancer; disparity with another local tribe; the young boys caringly shown the ways of the elders, going on annual treks to the Matsum forest and the great tree to understand how to protect the tree’s roots and the service it gives the Tayal for future crop balance. I’d certainly recommend seeing this very enlightening documentary about a balanced and spiritually healthy people you would never know existed otherwise - at times their lives are also painful, but mostly joyful, within picturesque and beautiful mountain range. The natural landscape always can nurture our dreams and soul, as well as feeds us. A bonus part of the disk features a short film of nature on the Smangus; birds and animals and the natural beautiful mountains. Packaging is a slipcase type with a wonderful booklet of photos of the Tayal mentioned in the documentary. Very rewarding.
