Professional Review of "Alan Tam In Slovakia (CD + DVD)"

March 18, 2015

Recently, besides "God of Songs" Jacky Cheung releasing the 30th anniversary album Wake Up Dreaming, another Hong Kong music legend, "Principal" Alan Tam, has released his 40th Anniversary Album Alan Tam In Slovakia. The album includes 11 newly recorded songs, 11 live recording video clips, four music videos and the album's making of. Among the tracks is Principal Tam's 40th anniversary theme song "Galaxy Years."

The album is produced by Tam and Johnny Yim, and all the album's tracks were newly recorded last year. The songs cover both new and old. Besides the 40th anniversary theme "Galaxy Years," Tam also remade classics like "Proud," "One Song, One Story," "Who Judges Right and Wrong in Love," "Silent Gratitude," "Can't Forget You," "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" and the most recent "A Touch of Heaven." To align with anniversary celebrations, the album takes the high-quality audiophile release route, and Tam especially traveled to Slovakia to record at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall in Bratislava with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. The album CD was also pressed in Germany which should appeal to audiophiles.

Going audiophile isn't something new for Tam as he has collaborated in concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra before and the new recording of Root of Love seven years ago also featured a live orchestral accompaniment. This time Universal Music has dedicated significant budget and resources into the recording of Tam's 40th Anniversary Album.

Looking at the album as a whole, the production quality of the songs is outstanding and the new arrangements do not stray unnecessarily far from the original versions. Overall, the arrangements are both refined and passionate, and effectively amplified by the orchestra. Moving on to Tam's performance, his vocals now not being as good as when he was young is a fact. As such, the final products may not surpass previous recordings. However, upon close viewing and listening, this recording still holds appeal as he performed with great composure and put a lot of emotion into interpreting the songs. The older the song (such as "Proud" and "Can't Forget You"), the better Tam's performance.

Lead plug "Galaxy Years" (Track 1) seems to be one of the less outstanding songs of the album. The melody is not particularly elegant and Kennie Lau's lyrics don't offer anything new. Tam's performance could also be more detailed to increase the song's appeal. The new version of "Can't Forget You" (Track 2) has a graceful and touching arrangement that emphasizes the blind infatuation of the song's protagonist, and Tam is especially great when performing this classic, perfectly conveying the song's feelings of love and resentment. For "Proud" (Track 6), the orchestra amplifies the song's original positivity and passion to highly contagious effect, while Tam brings out the fiery spirit of the song in his performance. The new arrangements and accompaniments for "One Song, One Story" (Track 3) and "Who Judges Right and Wrong in Love" (Track 4) wash away the karaoke style of the original songs, and the end results are pleasant and appealing.

Among other tracks, Summer Breeze Medley (Track 9) and Autumn Romance Medley (Track 10) are worth close listens, but "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" (Track 5) isn't particularly appealing. As for the DVD, the live clips and MVs are recorded and edited well, and the video quality is very good, such that it would make for a good test disc.
