Nominated for five awards at the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards, including a Best Director nod for Teddy Robin, All the Wrong Spies is a crowd-pleasing espionage comedy set at the dawn of the Second World War. Produced and written by Raymond Wong, the 1983 Cinema City production stars Brigitte Lin, singer-actors George Lam and Teddy Robin, and filmmaker extraordinaire Tsui Hark. Equally engrossing is the Cantonese theme song sung by George Lam, which is adapted from a popular Mandarin oldie by lyricist James Wong.
In 1939, spies from different sides converge in Hong Kong for the blueprint of a super weapon smuggled out of Nazi Germany by a Jewish scientist. Private investigator Yo (George Lam) has been commissioned to help him reach an American secret agent. But, with a couple of Gestapos hot on their heels, it is no easy job at all! The blueprint ends up in the lap of Police Commissioner "Fat Chick" (Paul Chun), who intends to hand it over to the Japanese. With the help of his Inspector friend Robin (Teddy Robin) and Chinese agent "No.1" (Brigitte Lin), Yo goes to meet Chick in the guise of Japan's top spy Hiroshima Taro, hoping to get the blueprint back. Chaos and complications ensue when the real Hiroshima (Tsui Hark) shows up...

"All the Wrong Spies", a hilarious send-up of "Casablanca", was Teddy Robin's directorial debut; it is such a smashing success that I wonder why he has directed only four more films in the 31 years since its release. George Lam stars as Yo Yo, a private detective. The year is 1939 and a Jewish scientist has fled Nazi Germany with the recipe for an atomic bomb. He journeys to Hong Kong intending to sell the formula to the United States. Yo Yo is tasked with shepherding the scientist to a meeting with the Americans.
Nazi spies have other plans and, when they intervene, the formula ends up in the hands of corrupt HK Police Commissioner Fat Chick (Paul Chun), who intends to sell it for his own profit to Japanese spymaster Hiroshima Taro (Tsui Hark). Yo Yo knows he needs help to recover the formula, so he persuades Police Inspector Robin (Teddy Robin) to help him steal it from Robin's boss. When they arrive at Fat Chick's mansion intending to complete their task, they encounter a mysterious (and shapely) cat burglar, who turns out to be Chinese spy Bridget (Brigitte Lin). As Yo Yo, Robin, Bridget, Hiroshima Taro, and the Nazi spooks all seek the formula and Fat Chick and his bodyguards (including Shing Fui On) fight to retain it, comic chaos ensues. The visual and verbal jokes come fast and furious. George Lam and Teddy Robin are in top form, often turning to the camera and speaking their nonsense directly to the viewer. Lam shows a knack for loose-limbed physical comedy and Paul Chun and Tsui Hark make fine comic villains. Brigitte Lin succeeds in seducing everyone, including this viewer. Don't miss this one! |
