YesAsia Editorial Description

Starting in the 1970s, Michael, Ricky and Sam Hui – the Hui brothers – created comedy classics that defined a generation and changed the face of Hong Kong cinema. Focusing their films on the lives of ordinary people, they combined wit and compassion to make comedies that struck a chord with filmgoers, eventually becoming one of the most formidable comedic forces Hong Kong has ever seen.

1993's Always On My Mind stars Michael Hui as a money-grubbing news anchor who's just discovered that he has cancer. As if that wasn't bad enough, the TV station he works at is also looking to fire him. Before the station has a chance to finalize the firing, though, the news anchor finds fame overnight thanks to his coverage of a sensational robbery. To further boost ratings, the TV station lets news of the anchor's illness slip. The anchor's similarly opportunistic wife (Josephine Siao) has no idea that this publicity stunt is actually rooted in truth, and happily goes along with the 'charade'...

Product Information

Director: Cheung Chi Lian

“Always On My Mind” 1993 is about self-discovery of a man after being diagnosed with an incurable disease. Michael Hui plays the title role as the coward newscaster-turned-opportunistic-moneygrubber, with much help from his “beloved” family. “Always On My Mind” is a vicious satire that exposes the media industry as somewhat fraudulent, weak, and shallow. All these end up to a rare comedy with a refined combination of laughter’s with tears and happiness with sorrow.

Terrific family film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Always On My Mind" is an affectionate family film about a TV newsman (Michael Hui), who learns that he has contracted intestinal cancer and may have only three months left to live. In the time remaining to him, he tries to cash in on his condition, to earn as much money as he can so that his family can have security after he passes away. He tells his family that it is all a trick to earn higher ratings for his TV station; they have no idea of his condition. In other hands, this could turn into a mawkish and maudlin story, but director Jacob Cheung handles the story with a deft comedic touch. He is aided in that effort by a terrific cast, headed by Michael Hui and the always-excellent Josephine Siao. In the end, "Always On My Mind" proves to be a heartwarming tale of familial love. Very highly recommended.
