YesAsia Editorial Description
A classic romantic drama from Hong Kong, An Autumn's Tale is one of the most memorable films of the 1980s. Directed by famed director Mabel Cheung, it stars Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung, and at the time of the film's release they were considered Hong Kong's most romantic on-screen couple. Also starring in the film is late singer Danny Chan.
The story deals with two people from different social backgrounds who begin the unlikeliest of romances in a land far from home. With Cheung's meticulous direction, there is an almost fairy-tale like quality to this film. Chow Yun Fat's "Boat Head" and Cherie Cheung's Lee Kay defined romance for years, and the song played in the film, "At the Forest and the Wild", moved many to tears! There is little wonder as to why An Autumn's Tale was voted into "Hong Kong's Top 10 Most Popular Films Ever" by internet voters.
An Autumn's Tale also picked up many awards at the 7th Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay by Alex Law Kai Yui (Mabel Cheung's husband), as well as Best Actor for Chow Yun Fat.

Upon my first viewing of director Mabel Cheung's "An Autumn's Tale", I was unimpressed (see my 2007 review shown below). When I pan a movie that so many people love, I usually like to return to the movie at a later date to reassess it. I've now done so and I'd like to apologize to anyone I might have discouraged from buying and watching the film; I was wrong. Upon a second viewing, I found "An Autumn's Tale" to be powerfully romantic.
I previously wrote that too much of the story consisted of trite clichés. Upon second thought, while the film often does deal in clichés and stereotypes, I find it to be heartfelt and emotionally honest. I criticized some of the filmmaking as being ham-handed. Some scenes are rather crudely made, but director Cheung takes wonderful advantage of the backdrop of scenic New York (some of the scenes were filmed only a couple blocks from where I used to live in Brooklyn Heights) and Cheung's rough-and-ready approach to filmmaking underscores the story's honesty. Now for the worst errors in my 2007 review. I described Chow Yun Fat's acting as overbroad. His portrayal of Samuel Pang is quite broad, but it serves his character well. Samuel Pang is a man who masks his failures and insecurities by acting larger than life, by pretending to be a big deal in his crummy little world. Chow's performance brilliantly captures that character and employs some wonderfully subtle touches to show his character's growth. Cherie Chung's performance is charmingly earnest, but it is Chow who captures the viewer's heart. Lastly, in my previous review I panned the ending as being thoroughly unconvincing. A realist certainly could argue that Samuel Pang couldn't so quickly have transformed himself and his fortunes, as we see in this ending. However, "An Autumn's Tale" is a romance and this ending is just about as romantic as it gets. Permit me to eat a heaping helping of crow. Upon a second viewing, I greatly enjoyed "An Autumn's Tale", I'm eager to see it again, and I now recommend it highly. |

For Chow and Chung fans only
For Chow and Chung fans only
"An Autumn's Tale" is about an art student (Cherie Chung) who travels to NYC to go to school and be with her wealthy boyfriend (Danny Chan). A thoroughly uncouth distant relative (Chow Yun Fat) puts her up in the world's dumpiest apartment. Cherie then discovers that boyfriend Chan has fallen for another woman.
The film shows Cherie adjusting to life in the Big Apple, Cherie and Chow Yun Fat developing an affection for each other, and the misunderstandings that prevent Chow from telling Cherie of his love for her. Will Chow and Cherie ever get together? I found too much of the story to be trite cliches, too much of the filmmaking to be ham-handed, too much of Chow Yun Fat's acting to be overbroad, and the film's resolution to be thoroughly unconvincing. I was greatly disappointed by "An Autumn's Tale" and I cannot recommend it. |

Excellent
Excellent
The first time I watched this was on an old scratchy VHS version ages ago. It's amazing to see this film finally restored and remastered and it looks amazing. The performance from the two leads is flawless as they draw you into their worlds and make you start to feel more for their characters. New York provides a very beautiful backdrop for this film and it's amazing to see how it has changed over the years. Furthermore, the chemistry between Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung feels so real that it's hard to believe that they are only acting. The story itself is very well written with a great ending. Highly recommended! |
