Chinese author Hu Bo's first and last feature An Elephant Sitting Still won Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 55th Golden Horse Film Awards and the FIPRESCI Award at the 68th Berlin Film Festival. The writer-director, who died of suicide before the film's release, adapted his own story into a melancholic masterpiece of bleak, elegaic realism. The four-hour film follows four desperate, wayward souls over one long and eventful day from dawn to dusk.

Bullied teen Wei Bu (Peng Yuchang) faces abuse both at home and at school. His classmate Huang Ling (Wang Yuwen) gets exposed online for her affair with a teacher. Wei Bu's aged neighbor Wang Jin (Li Congxi) is being pressured into a retirement home by his family. Gangster Yu Cheng (Zhang Yu), the older brother of Wei Bu's bully, must deal with the terrible consequences of sleeping with his friend's wife. These four tormented souls all become fascinated with the story of an elephant in the Inner Mongolia city of Manzhouli that sits still with its eyes closed, oblivious to all that surrounds it.
