Directed by journalist Tsai Tsung Lung, And Miles to Go Before I Sleep was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the 59th Golden Horse Film Awards. The Taiwan documentary delves into the circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting of an undocumented Vietnamese migrant worker in 2017.
Nguyen Quoc Phi, a young Vietnamese man who loved to sing, came to Taiwan to work at a construction site with hopes of earning money to bring home. In order to clear his debt as soon as possible, he became a runaway migrant worker. In August 2017, Nguyen was reported for car theft. During a run-in with the police, he was shot nine times and died on the way to the hospital. While public opinion supported the police's use of force, And Miles to Go Before I Sleep questions what led to Nguyen's death by looking at the tragic incident in the context of Taiwan's migrant labor system and minority rights issues.
