Like 2016's Mountains May Depart, Jia Zhangke's 2018 arthouse saga Ash is Purest White is an intricate decades-spanning relationship drama told in three acts. Selected for competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, the gangster drama again stars the auteur's wife and muse, Zhao Tao, as a lionhearted woman involved with a mobster played by Liao Fan (Hidden Man). Nominated for Best Screenplay at the Asian Film Awards, Ash is Purest White reinterprets jianghu themes into the epic story of a woman's love and determination amid the rapid changes of modern China.

In 2001, Qiao (Zhao Tao) is the girlfriend of gang boss Bin (Liao Fan), who is a bigshot in their dying coal mining hometown. When Bin gets cornered and attacked by rivals one day, Qiao grabs a gun to save him and ends up in prison. In 2006, Qiao is released from prison, only to discover that Bin has left town and moved on without her. She goes to great lengths to find and confront him.
