The Japanese chess game of shogi has been the focus of films like March Comes in Like a Lion, Shottan, The Miracle and Satoshi: A Move for Tomorrow, which are about shogi players who give their all for the game. Awake, the feature debut of writer-director Yamada Atsuhiro, adds AI to the chessboard. Yoshizawa Ryo (Kingdom) stars as a young programmer who embraces the new dream of computer shogi after giving up on becoming a professional player.

College student Eiichi (Yoshizawa Ryo) once aimed to become a professional shogi player. During his training days, he was unable to beat Riku (Wakaba Ryuya, All the Things We Never Said) and eventually gave up on pursuing shogi as a career. Returning to the life of an ordinary student, he becomes fascinated with computer programming. Specifically, he devotes himself to the goal of creating the best shogi computer program. A few years later, he launches the program Awake which wins a computer shogi tournament. Eiichi is then invited to participate in the Denou-sen, a tournament that pits AI against professional shogi players. Among the players is Riku.

夢の終わりは人生の結末じゃない。プロへの道を諦めた英一が、冴えない大学生活で見つけた常識破りの挑戦とは―!? 吉沢亮、若葉竜也共演による青春物語。監督は山田篤宏。2015年の将棋エンタテインメント「電王戦」に着想を得た本作は、第1回木下グループ新人監督賞グランプリに輝く自らのオリジナルシナリオを映画化した記念すべき本格的劇場映画デビュー作。――大学生の英一は、かつて奨励会で棋士を目指していた。同世代の圧倒的な強さと才能を誇る陸に敗れた英一は、プロの道を諦め、普通の学生に戻るべく大学に入学したが、ふとしたことでコンピュータ将棋に出会う。独創的かつ強い。まさに彼が理想とする将棋を繰り出す元となるプログラミングに心を奪われた英一は、早速人工知能研究会の扉をたたき、変わり者の先輩・磯野の手ほどきを受けることになる。自分の手で生んだソフトを強くしたい―。将棋以外の新たな目標を初めて見つけ、プログラム開発にのめり込む英一。数年後、自ら生み出したプログラムを〈AWAKE〉と名付け、コンピュータ将棋の大会で優勝した英一は、棋士との対局である電王戦の出場を依頼され・・・。
