YesAsia Editorial Description

The summer gets so much hotter with a bunch of beautiful babes in beach volleyball action! Beach Spike delivers abundant fan service with its attractive cast of hot models and pop idols, beginning with Chrissie Chau, Theresa Fu, and Jessica C., bouncing around in skimpy outfits. While acting chops may not be one of their strengths, the girls received three months of athletic training prior to filming, and they are covered by a pleasant supporting cast made up of Him Law, Lam Suet, Candice Yu, Sharon Yang, Alex Lam, Philip Ng, and Shaw legend Monk Law. Combining an inspiring sports theme with some lighthearted youthful romantic comedy, and even throwing Chinese kung fu into the mix a la Shaolin Soccer, director Tony Tang scores a winner in his live-action directorial debut after the animated film Little Gobie 3D.

On the scenic beach of Paradise Cove, Sharon (Chrissie Chau) and Rachel (Theresa Fu) work at the restaurant of their martial artist uncle (Monk Law) and are avid players of beach volleyball. Their carefree days are over when the wealthy Mrs. Brewer (Candice Yu) plans to acquire the land and develop it into a holiday resort, which is met with strong opposition from the residents. Even Mrs. Brewer's son Tim (Him Law), who has fallen in love with Sharon, openly defies her. Then both sides agree to settle the dispute by beach volleyball - the locals' team will enter an upcoming tournament against Mrs. Brewer's daughters Natalie (Jessica C.) and Natasha (Phoenix Valen), and whoever wins decides the fate of Paradise Cove...

Paradise Volleyball…or Lost Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I often like to watch a movie that’s fun, daft and simple, and pretty all right too. And “Beach Spike” is just that, a saving the day, feel good type with some beach volleyball antics. Its possible to believe that I bought this more for Chrissie and Theresa getting sweaty between a volley ball net than anything else, but as I’d, eh?, also played the PSP game ‘Dead Or Alive Paradise’ (well, I hadn’t played a DOA before…so) this film bought deja vu moments. Ladies volleyball (sigh, but no Rio)! Otherwise, yes I probably did buy for Chrissie and Theresa getting sweaty! But “Beach Spike” also as charm ‘n’ romance, a decent plot path that doesn’t get you needing a doctor’s prescription for medication to cure madcap HK movie moments and the volleyball final finishes it off nicely (But those ball to face hits…ouch).

The plot is about settling a land dispute with a volleyball tournament, concerning a wealthy families’ decision to build a beach stomping holiday resort that would destroy the sandy beach habitat of Paradise Cove and the volleyball fun Sharon (Chrissie) and Rachel (Theresa) like to have. So local residents kick up a ruckus with a rich beach invading family, and Sharon and Rachel (two names you might see on British car top windscreens in the 70s and 80s) get themselves into a volleyball beach match with posh ladies Natalie (Jessica C) and Natasha (Phoenix), two daughters of Mrs Brewer (Candice), the bemused lady who would like the beach transformation, due to her late husband’s wishes. But Sharon and Rachel lose the volleyball match (darn) to the highly trained Nats. To ‘fight’ another day the girls call a re-match at the annual HK Volleyball Tournament that becomes the ‘battleground’ decider to whether Mrs Brewer goes ahead with the holiday resort plan (after a big committee discussion of course). If Sharon and Rachel win the tournament, they save the beach (hurrah!) - if they lose to the Nats, the diggers, builders and architects with large blueprints get to mess up a natural beach with heavy machinery (boo!). “Beach Spike” as a bit of romance when Mrs Brewer’s son Tim (Him) saves Sharon from a swimming accident and then dating Sharon which causes big problems for Tim’s ‘protective’ sisters. After Sharon gets injured in a fight with the Nats, Tim puts his foot down leaving his beachhead family to be with Sharon, hoping her and Rachel win the crucial tournament to keep Paradise Cove a pretty beach.
