YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Taylor Wong (The Three Swordsmen), wistful 1984 romance Behind the Yellow Line is an early and memorable effort from Hong Kong superstars Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung, and Anita Mui. Only in their early 20s, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui, who won Best Supporting Actress at the 4th Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance, were both newcomers at the time, and this film was an important stepping stone in their career. A gentle and photogenic drama about young love, chance encounters, and uncertain fate, Behind the Yellow Line is typical of 1980s romances in narrative and style, but it stands out as an affecting time capsule, capturing three of Hong Kong's greatest and most-loved stars at the prime of their youth.
On the way to his first day of work, young civil servant Paul (Leslie Cheung) encounters two very different women on the subway: girl-next-door Monica (Maggie Cheung) who recently ended a painful affair with a married man and the sassy and wealthy Anita (Anita Mui) who takes an immediate liking to Paul. Crossing paths everyday during their subway commute, Paul and Monica take the gradual steps from strangers to lovers. Anita, however, isn't about to give up on Paul so easily, and Monica wavers in the face of overtures from her ex-boyfriend, putting the young lovers' relationship on the rocks.

Not only did BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE (aka Fate?or Destiny? serve as a major stepping stone in propelling Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui to movie stardom, at the time of its release in 1984 it also provided a clever introduction to the new-fangled, updated, electrified and ultra-modernized Hong Kong subway system to the public.
Leslie, Maggie, Anita and the pristine MTR all shine brightly in this sweet comic drama that tells the story of a young man (Leslie) who falls for the girl of his dreams (Maggie) after a chance encounter on the subway. Complications set in, of course, not the least of which is the third side to the love triangle in the form of a wealthy gal-about-town (Anita). Along the way Leslie also has to deal with the intrusions of family, Maggies womanizing ex-boss, her womanizing new boss (a charming turn by reliable Chan Friend) and the flighty fickleness within Maggies own heart. Maggie is exquisite as the girl of Leslies dreams but youre never sure if you really want Leslie to wind up with her. Meanwhile, Anita first tries to seduce Leslie as her own Boy Toy but soon discovers the pure goodness and sweetness within his soul. In the end, a touchingly bittersweet Anita proves that even if money cant buy love, it can sometimes help to buy happiness. The story culminates with the memorable game of fate played out by the star trio throughout the MTR lines under the city. Depending upon whom youd prefer to see Leslie wind up with ?Maggie or Anita ?the ending will be happily satisfying or heart-crushingly sad. BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE derives its English title from the public address warning to subway riders telling them where they should safely stand on the platforms. The story proves that there are boundaries in relationships that must be acknowledged for better or worse. Its original title Destiny?is also fitting because Leslie, Maggie and Anita all were destined to achieve ultimate stardom in their film careers. Anita, after all, won the Hong Kong Films Best Actress Award for this role ?shes brash, shes boorish, shes funny, shes charming, shes delightful and shes the quintessential 1980s material girl. See it for the terrific performances. Brace yourself for the dramatic ups and downs that threaten to waylay Leslie and Maggies relationship. Listen and be moved by the heart-wrenching duet of the title song as performed by Hong Kongs essential soul mates, Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. The DVD is Region 3 NTSC, so please be forewarned on that account. It features a crisp and colorful presentation of the feature as well as Mandarin and Cantonese trailers along with some unremarkable photos and movie stills. The DVD is not packed with fantastic extras but the movie and its star performances are the only reasons youll need to enjoy BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE. |

Beautiful Movie!!!
Beautiful Movie!!!
I've been waiting for a long time for this movie to come out. It's a truly beautiful movie, definitely one of Anita's best films. You can already see Anita's acting ability taking shape. The postcards are wonderful but unfortunately, there's none with Anita's picture which is a shame. Anyways, get a copy if you can!!! |
