Animation auteur Hosoda Mamoru's sci-fi fantasy Belle premiered to great acclaim at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Like in his previous films such as The Boy and the Beast and Summer Wars, the writer-director uses a fantastical setting to poignantly explore themes of coming of age, familial ties and alienation. Inspired by the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Belle follows an introverted teen who becomes a pop star in the virtual world. The voice cast for the animated blockbuster includes Nakamura Kaho, Satoh Takeru, Yakusho Koji, Narita Ryo, Sometani Shota, Tamashiro Tina and Ikuta Lilas of YOASOBI.
17-year-old high school girl Naito Suzu lives in a rural town with her father. As a child, Suzu loved to sing with her mother. After her mother's death, she stopped singing and closed her heart to the real world. One day, Suzu is invited into the virtual world of "U" where billions of people gather. There, using the avatar of Belle, Suzu can sing freely again like she used to, and she becomes hugely popular performing her own songs. Suzu is intrigued by the avatar Dragon, a mysterious and feared presence in the world of U, and seeks out his castle to meet him.
