YesAsia Editorial Description

After taking two lovers on a journey through Beijing in Lovers On The Road, independent filmmaker Jessey Tsang brings that journey of discovery home with her sophomore film Big Blue Lake. The story of an actress returning home to redeem her past sins, Tsang shot most of her exquisite drama at her home village of Ho Chung, a small, quiet rural area that is rarely seen in Hong Kong. A director of both narrative and documentary films, Tsang cast professional actors like Leila Tong and Lawrence Chou alongside real Ho Chung residents in the film - including her own father - to enhance the realist nature of the film. One of the most acclaimed Hong Kong independent films of 2011, Big Blue Lake has been screened at film festivals around the world, and Tsang was nominated for the Best New Filmmaker award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her work.

Lai Yee (Leila Tong) returns to her quiet rural village home in Hong Kong after an attempt at a career in Mainland China ends in failure. Having spent many years away, Lai Yee is shocked to discover that her mother (Amy Chum) is showing early symptoms of Alzheimer's, and her siblings have moved away. While she struggles to readjust to the village life, Lai Yee's former classmate Lin Jin (Lawrence Chou) comes back into her life. Together, they explore lost memories, a chance at love, and the mystical Big Blue Lake that will give them courage to start anew.

Product Information

Director: Jessey Tsang

Set in Ho chung Village, Sai Kung, Big Blue Lake borrows the long history of its location to t ell a story that is at once realistic and dreamlike. Charting the soul-searching journey of its two protagonists (played by Leila Kong and Lawrence Chou) to the Big Blue Lake entrenched in their memories, the film exquisitely and lightheartedly portrays the transience of people and places, while highlighting the permanence of love and family. As her third filming project in the Sai Kung district (after the multimedia work "All About My Ho Chung" and the short "The Life and Times of Ho Chung Village"). Big Blue Lake is as much a continuation of Tsang Tsui-Shan's interest in romantic tales as it is of her deep affection for the area she grew up in. The stylistic blend of sensibility and sensuality displayed in this film is distinctly the director's own. Set in a realistic world. Big Blue Lake is a story of love family, and the changes that transpire in people and places. Cheung Lai Yee (Leila Kong) leaved her origin, Ho Chung Village, in order to pursue success in the theatre world. A few years later. she had been through failures and she returned to her root to give herself a break. But she found everything there had changed. Sheung's routine days became colorful with Lin Jin's (Lawrence Chou) arrival. They were once high school classmates for two years before Lin moved away. The two then set off on a journey and Cheung secretly fell in love with Lin.... While searching for old memories in the village. Cheung discovered that the acquaintances with people there created new stories and new memories. The characters in Big Blue Lake have done things they regret, but they finally find the strength to let go of the past and start anew.
