Team Batista no Eiko series writer Kaido Takeru's best-selling 2007 novel Black Pean 1988 gets adapted for television in a 2018 TBS drama starring Arashi's Ninomiya Kazunari. A prequel to Team Batista no Eiko, Black Pean revolves around an insufferably arrogant genius surgeon and his clashes with the hospital over internal politics, surgical procedures, new technology and medical conspiracies. Written by Little Giant screenwriter Ushio Kentaro and helmed by Hanzawa Naoki and Rikuoh director Fukuzawa Katsuo, the medical series co-stars Hashimoto Satoshi and Koizumi Kotaro as surgeons and rising star Takeuchi Ryoma as an earnest intern under the protagonist.

Lone wolf surgeon Tokai Seijiro (Ninomiya Kazunari) has outstanding suturing skills that are unmatched, but he holds an ordinary position at a university hospital and has no interest in getting ahead. Though he has a 100% surgical success rate, his arrogant and disagreeable personality constantly puts him at odds with the people around him, earning him the nickname "Demon of the Operation Room." Tokai harbors a longtime grudge against his superior, renowned surgeon Kurosaki (Hashimoto Satoshi), over a mysterious incident that involved his surgeon father.
