A song for the good days and the bad days
Everyone could use an encouraging song to start out the new year with, and my theme song for this tiring January was Mrs. GREEN APPLE's Boku no Koto. As a support song for Japan's national high school soccer tournament, Boku no Koto naturally carries an inspiring message to cheer on young people, but it's not exactly a cheerily positive song. Instead, the song delivers empathy and reassurance for both the good days and the bad days.

Opening quietly with a soothing guitar melody and gentle vocals, Boku no Koto connects with softly self-reflecting lyrics in the first verse: "What's the difference between me and you? / I know that we're all living creatures / But I'm frightened by something." Beats and backing instruments kick in for the second verse that responds to fears and sadness with self-encouragement because "There's still tomorrow." Accompanied by marching drum beats and brass, the refrain soars with the declaration of "Oh, what a wonderful day" and the sentiment that happiness is present even on a day of defeat.

The song's middle eight is particularly poetic and climactic, calling upon imagery of flowers blooming in winter and the journey of life against a rich backdrop of harmonizing vocals and instrumentation. After a rousing horn section, the song quiets back down to a raw and thoughtful verse that echoes the opening verse: "I know that miracles are dead / Effort and loneliness may not be rewarded / But even so I have walked till today / The days that people speak of / That's it, the path." When the song rises again into a refrain, Omori Motoki's vocals are particularly heartfelt and the beats particularly pronounced, emphasizing the bittersweet yet uplifting message of the song.

The single's two B-sides are both strong offerings as well. Tomoshibi picks up the pace as an uptempo alternative rock number that whizzes by with a refreshing melody and evocative lyrics directed towards an enigmatic "you." Folktale sets a haunting tone with a moody prolonged opening of syncopating beats and crashing piano keys. The song's calm melody, prominent beats and comforting vocals meld together into an appealingly wistful number of conflicted emotions and unsettled hearts. Folktale's final lines of "Today again, I walk" seems to recall the lyrics of Boku no Koto, providing a perfect ending for the entire single.
