YesAsia Editorial Description

In 2016, Taiwan-based Malaysian filmmaker Lau Kek Huat traced his family history back to his grandfather who participated in Malaysia's Communist movement in the documentary Absent Without Leave. He draws from his grandfather's story for his narrative feature debut Boluomi, which earned Best New Director nominations for Lau and co-director Vera Chen at the 56th Golden Horse Film Awards. Screened in the Busan Film Festival's New Currents section, Boluomi links two storylines set in 1950s Malaya and present-day Taiwan.

To get away from his father, Malaysian student Yi Fan (Wu Nien Hsuan) heads to Taiwan in search of a new start. To help support her family, Laila (Laila Ulao) leaves the Philippines to work illegally in Taiwan. Two outsiders in a foreign land, Yi Fan and Laila meet and fall in love, but can't avoid separation.

In Yi Fan's family history, there is a taboo past. Yi Fan's grandfather was a fugitive Chinese communist guerrilla. Back then, the guerrillas would hide babies among jackfruit (boluomi) in order to transport them safely out of the jungles. That was how it was for Yi Fan's father.
