YesAsia Editorial Description

What happens when the queen bee meets the school's ultimate geek? Disaster! Taiwan sweetheart Ivy Chen is the popular girl pursued by all the boys on campus in Campus Confidential, but her true love may actually be a know-it-all computer nerd played by Wilson Chen, who is near unrecognizable with his quirky demeanor and unkempt geek appearances. With their two previous pairings (Modern People, Silent Code) meeting with good reception, Ivy Chen and Wilson Chen bring a fresh new twist in their third successful collaboration.

Kiki (Ivy Chen) is the girl of everyone's dreams and there's only one thing she hates the most: otaku boys. Venting her disgust for nerds online, she turns into the enemy of her school's geeks. But then she encounters the university's smartest I.T. geek Lucky (Wilson Chen) when he saves her from a mysteriously dried up lake. According to legend, those who meet at the dried up lake are fated to be together forever. Kiki's resistance to the love spell eventually draws her closer to Lucky instead.

Beauty and the Geeks Unite (A) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Law student and part time fashion model Kiki (Ivy Chen) is the pin up girl to all geeks at her University. Computer nerds, online video gamers and besotted geek students are full of ecstatic admiration for cute beauty Kiki, as if she were a major pop star. Main problem though, Kiki hates the Geek Way and often vents her disdain for the pimply ones with prissy online bulletins about them on the internet, which of course upsets and angers many a university geek who adore her. The last boyfriend on earth for Kiki would be a video gamer loving computer hack who might eat a rat sandwich for breakfast. Kiki does however sport a student boyfriend, basket ball player Chang Sheng (Chaing Kang-che). But one geek that freaks Kiki out the most is the sleepy I.T. wiz Lucky Wu (Wilson Chen), a student having a full top 10 roster of Kiki pet geek hates. Lucky though is hailed a top notch geek by his nerdy peers due to Lucky’s 24-7 maintenance of the universitie's online network BBS (hence his sleepy demeanour).

One night though when Kiki is beside the campus ‘Chrysanthemum’ lake, she sees a water vortex and the whole lake rapidly drained of water. Shocked Kiki slips on the wet mud into the empty lake’s centre. At this exact time Lucky is about and hears Kiki scream so wanders down to the lake and himself slips down into the muddy lake bowel bumping into Kiki’s bottom. Screaming of accusations of perversion towards a bemused (and sleepy) geek Lucky, Kiki runs horrified back to her dorm.

The following day news spreads amongst the students about the lake incident and that Kiki and Lucky the ones there that night (via Kiki’s informative boyfriend Chang Sheng). But the student’s talk of a mysterious legend relating to a night star configuration at the time a female Chinese revolutionary leapt into the lake over love, so when any two people meet at the lake when it dries up are immediately fated to fall in love forever. Kiki isn’t happy, falling in love with nerdy geek Lucky? Forever! >_< So Kiki believing the strange legend researches its origin at the university library, discovers couples who had fallen in love together at the lake, such as a sophisticated woman and a humble fish merchant. But determined to break this ‘love spell’ Kiki later discovers, also in the university library, that if she strikes a monument bell 10 times with a specific hammer, it will nullify the love spell. Trouble is the hammer has been buried many years in a remote place.

Beauty and the Geeks Unite (B) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Kiki fuming that a geek is to be her future love, gets so frustrated by her embarrassing situation she vents her anger at Lucky by his geeky attire by pulling off some geeky badges he wears, and throwing out his prized geeky computer hardware and precious geeky things out of his back pack into water, which then upsets Lucky quite a bit he hides away. So much that the Federation of Geeks at the university are forced to beseech and demand Kiki to apologise to Lucky pronto, otherwise their BBS I.T. system won’t be maintained anymore. Reluctant but feeling guilty Kiki decides to make her apology to Lucky asking him back to the university for BBS support. In doing so Kiki discovers more about him, learning that Lucky suffers many social phobias, one being his fear of popping bubble wrap and his need for orange juice when stressed. Kiki becomes a little compassionate. But nevertheless, Kiki wants their dried Chrysanthemum love lake spell broken and sets forth into a lonely wilderness in search of the metal hammer. Not having a clue where to look for it she coincidently finds Lucky there, with a metal detector, also looking for the metal hammer. Kiki is curious of why Lucky should want to help her break their love bond, and Lucky’s answer to her is that he just wants Kiki to be happy

‘Campus Confidential’ is a well made goofy rom-com. It’s not mere slapstick and tomfoolery nonsense, but a brilliantly thought out campus and nerds satire with an intelligent script. Wilson ( ah, ‘The Twins Effect II’ and ‘Silk’ days) is great as the sleepy geek Lucky and VERY convincing as such (hopefully he didn’t eat a rat sandwich) and Ivy Chen (or Ivy and her Geek League?) is just perfect as the nicely irritating prissy miss with glamour, even when she throws all of Lucky’s precious geek things out of his pram. It’s a movie that humorously and with FUN shows valuable importance in everyone, not just beautiful glamour people, but geeks and plonkers as well. It’s also edited to perfection by its slick pace and honed plot. The final twist (or water vortex..ha) in its tail makes so much sense considering the characters are mainly various forms of geek. And a very good twist it is too. It also as good supporting roles with lovely Shu-yau Kuo’s tae-kwon-do and Kiki’s roommate and of how she dreams of wanting to be just like Kiki.

But don’t take my word for it, ‘Variety’ have also thumbed this up as a job well done. If you haven’t seen this yet, get this now and enjoy!
