August 21, 2013 Refined, engaging, and great acting. With so many accomplished actors in the movie, you'd expect a good movie going into it. Sadly, that's not always the case. Fortunately, that is indeed the case with "New World." The high level story plot of struggles for the reign of a headless mob organization isn't a novel idea as there have been similar movies from both Hong Kong and Japan. What this movie excels at in comparison to such "predecessors" is the director's management of the story telling; it isn't clustered with excessive details, nor does it have unnecessary twists and turns (there are twists and turns, but at the right moments). Such fluidity and efficiency (although the movie is over two hours) in the story telling, and the great actors' abilities in telling not only the present, but being able to convey the past without explicitly showing them culminates in a very engaged story that has depth. November 9, 2010 A diamond in the roughI usually never write reviews on Yesasia.com (in fact, the last one I wrote was of Kim Min Jong's You're My Life album which was almost 10 years ago!), but I felt someone needed to speak for this gem of a film. Though this isn't a film that completely blew me away, in the modern day Korean cinema where the market seems to be saturated with fast pace movies that punches you in the face (albeit sometimes very well) with plethora of young stars that quite frankly are there to draw the young crowd rather than to display great acting, this movie shows that a much simpler and slow paced movie can deliver on the goods. The gist of the story isn't anything new....a loser (a small time gangster in this case) falls for a girl and "sacrifices" himself for her sake...but the story telling and an off-beat, comedic, and sometimes rebellious way in which actor Park Joong Hoon portrays his character is what makes the film unique. The love story is told in away that isn't over sentimental, but you feel the strength of that love just as strongly...and for a brief moment, you are left feeling moved (and envious) by such selflessness for the sake of another human being. There are some gaps in the story that leaves a little to be desired...but minor details.... I'd recommend this movie to just about anyone....however, I fear if you don't speak Korean...you may not be able to appreciate all of the subtleties that subtitles will fail to convey....a shame.
