Based on the manga by Shimizu Akane, the anime Cells at Work! goes into the human body to depict the comings and goings of anthropomorphized cells, in particular a bumbling rookie Red Blood Cell getting the hang of her job and an intrepid White Blood Cell that fights off germs. The cells take the battle to the bowels in the feature animation Cells At Work!! Special Screening Edition, which was released theatrically in Japan in 2020. Based on the fifth volume of the manga, the story is also a part of the anime's second season Cells at Work!! that aired in 2021.
One day, White Blood Cell and Red Blood Cell encounter a Normal Cell that is protecting lost lactic acid bacteria. White Blood Cell and Normal Cell head to the intestines to deliver the lost lactic acid bacteria to their rightful place. But what awaits them is their strongest enemy and the body's biggest crisis.
