The celebrated life and tragic death of famed silent film star Ruan Lingyu is told in Stanley Kwan's award-winning docudrama Center Stage. Also known as Actress, the film covers a period from 1929 to 1935 when Ruan Lingyu (Maggie Cheung) ruled the screen as the undisputed goddess of Chinese cinema. But in private, Ruan was a rebellious figure who bristled against the rigid societal conventions of her time. Ruan took her own life at the age of 25 amidst tabloid criticism and controversy, but her legend is immortalized in Stanley Kwan's loving, engrossing work. Utilizing archival footage from Ruan Lingtu's early films, interview segments with her contemporaries and modern actors, re-enactments of select Ruan Lingyu performances by Maggie Cheung, and dramatized sequences depicting the turbulent last years of her life, Center Stage paints a complex, structurally enthralling portrait of a beloved artist of the cinema.

Maggie Cheung turns in the performance of a lifetime as Ruan Lingyu, earning her Best Actress at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. The film also swept five awards the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1992. Co-starring Cecilia Yip, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Carina Lau, Center Stage is a stunning work of art that can simultaneously challenge and delight film lovers everywhere.
