Suetsugu Yuki's popular manga series Chihayafuru, which has won both the Manga Taisho Award and the Kodansha Manga Award, arrives on the silver screen in a two-part live-action adaptation starring breakout actress Hirose Suzu. Taking on the first big-screen leading role of her young career, Hirose, who impressed with her performance in Our Little Sister, plays a schoolgirl making strides in the world of competitive karuta, a card game that originated in 19th-century Japan. Directed by Koizumi Norihiro (The Liar and His Lover), Chihayafuru co-stars rising actors Nomura Shuhei (Flying Colors) and Mackenyu (Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future), the son of Sonny Chiba.

After successfully forming a karuta high school club, Ayase Chihaya (Hirose Suzu) and her childhood friend Mashima Taichi (Nomura Shuhei) practice diligently with their teammates to strive for the nationals. Besides holding on to the hope of meeting Wataya Arata (Mackenyu) again, Chihaya also becomes obsessed with the goal of beating reigning karuta queen Wakamiya Shinobu (Matsuoka Mayu). Meanwhile, both Taichi and Arata also have to confront painful experiences and personal obstacles as they each strive to understand why it is they play karuta.
