YesAsia Editorial Description

Funnyman Michael Hui brings his unique comic sensibilities to Chocolate Inspector, an enjoyable Hong Kong comedy co-starring the divine Anita Mui! Michael Hui is Inspector Chocolate, a chocolate-addicted police inspector who hasn't been promoted in ages. He's paired with partner Egg Tart (Ricky Hui), and Chiao Chiao (Anita Mui), a rookie cop who's also a Miss Hong Kong Pageant contestant (!). The pair of cops is supposed to keep Chiao Chiao out of trouble, but Inspector Chocolate and Egg Tart manage to get themselves (and Chiao Chiao) embroiled in a kidnapping case that has potentially dangerous consequences. Michael Hui's celebrated comic instincts are put on full display in Chocolate Inspector, which includes a bunch of hilarious sight gags and Hui's usual droll deadpan delivery. Co-starring Sibelle Hu, Roy Chiao (Qiao Hong), Chan Wai Man, Elvis Tsui, Michael Chow, and Maria Cordero. Directed by Philip Chan, Chocolate Inspector is a creative, breathlessly hilarious comedy that demonstrates why Michael Hui was the top Hong Kong comedian during the seventies and eighties!

Sweet stuff Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Director Philip Chan's "Chocolate Inspector" (more properly entitled "Inspector Chocolate") successfully navigates the line between cop comedy and police drama. The film's opening scenes show Inspector Chocolate (Michael Hui) and his partner Egg Tart (Ricky Hui) make a hash of an attempted bust of a gang of auto thieves. As a consequence of the mess, they are demoted by Captain Kiu (Roy Chiao) to working on missing persons cases, and are assigned responsibility for keeping Kiu's daughter Chiao Chiao (Anita Mui) out of trouble. Chiao Chiao is a bumbling newbie police detective distracted by her pursuit of the title in the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant.

The trio gets their first missing person case when one of the adorable sons of a popular TV chef (Sibelle Hu) disappears. While never failing to find a place for workplace humor, director Chan skillfully shifts gears from slapstick comedy to taut thriller as the search for the little boy reaches one dead end after another and hope for finding the tyke begins to wane.

With a smartly conceived script and a terrific cast, "Chocolate Inspector" delivers the goods. Michael Hui plays the exasperated inspector expertly, while Anita Mui revels in spoofing her glamorous image. Recommended.
