Hawick Lau and Zheng Shuang star in the 2016 romantic period drama Chronicle of Life, based on a novel by Fei Wo Si Cun whose works have also inspired the TV dramas Endless Love, The Girl in Blue and Sealed with a Kiss. In the grand tradition of Fei Wo Si Cun's tortured love stories, the Yu Zheng-produced series depicts the fated, twist-filled romantic triangle between a palace maid, an imperial guard and Emperor Kangxi.

As a child, Lin Lang (Zheng Shuang), the daughter of a falsely accused official, witnessed the execution of her entire family. While fleeing for her life, she encounters the young Kangxi. The two forge a brief but memorable bond despite not knowing each other's identities, and vow to meet again. Afterwards, Lin Lang loses her memories in an accident but finds refuge in the household of her cousin Rong Ruo (Vin Zhang). The two develop a close relationship growing up together. Worried that Lin Lang's identity will eventually bring trouble to the family, Rong Ruo's father (Chen Liangping) secretly sends her away into the palace to become a maid. Lin Lang originally thought she would spend the rest of her life alone as a maid, but in the palace she crosses paths again with both Emperor Kangxi (Hawick Lau) and Rong Ruo. Recognizing Lin Lang as the girl he met in his youth, Kangxi tries everything he can to make her remember their vow. Meanwhile, Rong Ruo, who is also Kangxi's trusted friend, hopes to take Lin Lang far away from the palace.
