YesAsia Editorial Description

Yeo Jin Gu (The Royal Gambler) and Kim Kang Woo (Goodbye Mr. Black) uncover the mysteries surrounding an alien encounter in tvN's first sci-fi drama Circle. Six Flying Dragons' screenwriters Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon team up again for the drama directed by Min Ji Ki, the director of the comedy show SNL Korea. The two leading actors play brothers living in two separate realities in the two-part drama, which is composed of "Beta Project" and "The Beautiful New World." Gong Seung Yeon (The Master of Revenge), Highlight's Lee Gi Kwang, Ahn Woo Yun (Strong Woman Do Bong Soon), Jung In Sun (Naked Fireman), Seo Hyun Chul (My Fair Lady), Kwon Hyuk Soo (Lucky Romance) and stage actor Oh Eui Sik (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo) are also in the cast.

In the present day, university student Woo Jin (Yeo Jin Gu) becomes linked to a series of suicides related to his twin brother Bum Gyun (An Woo Yun), a UFO conspiracy theorist who was sent to a psychiatric hospital after their father's disappearance. Woo Jin meets classmate Han Jung Yeon (Gong Seung Yeon), who bears an uncanny resemblance to the alien the brothers met as children. Jung Yeon, whose friend also committed suicide, teams up with Woo Jin to find out the truth behind the suicide cases. In the year 2037, the world is divided into the polluted and crime-ridden "Ordinary Earth" and the pristine utopian community of "Smart Earth," a technologically advanced society without crime, illness and pain. Kim Joo Hyuk (Kim Kang Woo), a veteran detective of Ordinary Earth, manages to gain access into Smart Earth after an unprecedented murder takes place in the crimeless community. However, his real intention is to find his long-lost brother whom he believes is connected to Smart Earth.

Brave New World of Korean sci-fi
When Circle began airing in May 2017, it wasn't very clear where exactly this drama would be going considering its story would involve two worlds, two time periods, two brothers, murders and an alien. Is it really possible for a 12-episode original series to pack in this much stuff and not be a hot mess? Somehow, Circle makes it all work in thrilling and thought-provoking manner.

For most of the series, Circle splits each episode into two equally compelling halves. The first part of each episode, titled Beta Project, is set in the present day and follows Yeo Jin Gu as college student Kim Woo Jin. The harried youth has a troubled twin brother, Bum Kyoon (Ahn Woo Yeon), who has been obsessed with aliens since they encountered a mysterious woman as children. Their father eventually disappeared along with this woman, whom Bum Kyoon believes to be an alien. Woo Jin dismisses his brother's conspiracy theories, but he is forced to reevaluate everything he knows when strange things keep happening: a series of mysterious deaths strikes the campus, a classmate (Gong Seung Yeon) who looks exactly like the alien woman of their childhood appears before them, and Bum Kyoon goes missing while looking for evidence to prove his suspicions.

Part 2 of each episode, titled Brave New World, is set in the future where Kim Kang Woo plays Kim Joon Hyuk, a gritty detective in the crime- and pollution-infested quarters of Ordinary Earth. While Woo Jin searches desperately for Bum Kyoon in the present day, Joon Hyuk is also searching for clues about the missing brothers in 2037. A murder case gives him the opportunity to finally enter the impenetrable quarters of Smart Earth, a technologically advanced and creepily authoritarian utopian community that has supposedly eliminated crime, anger and violence from the lives and minds of its citizens through a chip implant that regulates emotions.

As the two timelines unfold in each episode, Woo Jin gradually uncovers a chilling conspiracy involving technology developed by his father, and Joon Hyuk unravels the conspiracy behind Smart Earth. Joon Hyuk's connection to Woo Jin and Bum Kyoon is also gradually revealed as the drama progresses. The mysteries and anguish of the two timelines eventually converge in shocking manner in the drama's final two episodes.

Circle gets steadily more complex and mysterious as the story progresses while also being remarkably coherent and focused in its narrative exposition. The two-part structure of the episodes effectively develops and mirrors the interrelated timelines, and each episode thrills and intrigues twofold with its strong dual storylines. Visually, Circle also convincingly swings between the present and future world, and between Ordinary Earth and Smart Earth, through effective use of CG, cinematography and set design.

At only 12 episodes, Circle is too short to fully engage all the material it puts forth, particularly the alien angle, but it sure does a valiant job trying by hurling forward bravely with mind-blowing ideas and gripping twists. The pure vision and ambition of the sci-fi mystery is already surprising for Korean television, but what's even more surprising is the clarity in execution over limited time. The pacing is fast, the editing is tight, and the performances are superb for the drama's entire duration. There's nary an expendable scene to be found. The makers of Circle may have bitten off slightly more than they can chew for a 12-episode run, but what an amazing and ambitious run it is.
