YesAsia Editorial Description
A distinctly Hong Kong creation, City Hunter is a wild mixture of slapstick comedy, kung-fu action, and colorful, over-the-top weirdness as only Jackie Chan and Wong Jing can deliver. The beautiful Joey Wong (A Chinese Ghost Story) is Ryu Saeba's assistant Kaori, and Chingmy Yau (Naked Killer) is Saeko, a to-die-for sexy female action hero in leather hotpants! Handsome popstar Leon Lai shows up as a suave card-throwing gambler, and international martial arts actors Richard Norton and Gary Daniels appear as the primary targets of Jackie Chan's frequent kicks and punches. Creatively choreographed kung-fu and wacky comedy reign supreme in Wong Jing's City Hunter!
This edition includes interviews with Jackie Chan, Wong Jing and stunt man Rocky Lai, plus trailer and behind-the-scenes.

Thank you, Joy Sales!
There is no movie which divides Jackie Chan's American fans quite as widely as 1993's Wong Jing-directed "City Hunter". Perhaps this is attributable to the crummy prints of the film we've seen (I'd previously seen a murky VHS tape and a grainy unremastered DVD) or to the fact that many of those fans don't grasp the Hong Kong tradition of super-silly Lunar New Year movies, of which this is one. Whatever the reason, having seen this sparklingly remastered Joy Sales release, I'm ready to switch sides from the haters to the lovers of "City Hunter".
Jackie Chan stars as Ryu Saeba, a private eye as renowned for his lecherousness as he is for his detecting skills. His late partner, with his dying breath, entrusted his daughter to Ryu's care upon the promise that Ryu never hit on her. She now has grown into the lovely Kaori (Joey Wong), who serves as Ryu's assistant and yearns for his attentions. Ryu is tasked with tracking down Shizuko (pretty Kumiko Goto), the runaway daughter of a Japanese publishing tycoon. Seeking to evade Ryu's clutches, Shizuko hides out on a luxury cruise liner, with Ryu and Kaori hot on her heels. Unfortunately for all of them, this cruise ship has been targeted by a band of terrorists determined to hijack the ship, steer it to Thailand, and there hold its wealthy passengers for ransom. Dashing secret agent Gundam (Leon Lai) and leggy danger girl Saeko (Chingmy Yau) seek to spoil the terrorists plans. With all these pieces in place, the stage is set for over-the-top, wildly zany (and occasionally politically incorrect) action. "City Hunter" delivers plentiful laughs, lots of gorgeous young women, together with spectacular stunts and fighting skills. No one on this planet could have pulled this off with the goofy aplomb shown here by Jackie Chan. While we expect skilled stuntwork from Jackie (and our expectations are met), Chingmy Yau also stands out in her action sequences. "City Hunter" was a box-office smash and, now that I've seen it in this crystal-clear remastered print, I understand why. Don't miss it! |

Jackie Gone A-Hunting!!
Slapstick comedy (but good), sexy outfits for the ladies (unusual) and great punch-ups! I like this unusual story. Jackie has always been popular in Japan and so decided to do a Japanese 'manga' character.
He's a private detective (also a suave ladies' man) who lost his partner but promised to look after the partner's now orphaned little girl. Time flies and the little girl grew into a beautiful woman, played by Joey, (who's also his assistant) who has a crush on her 'guardian'/boss. To keep his promise not to take advantage of this beautiful creature, he has to keep the relationship platonic. But she thinks differently and so bought 2 cruise tickets as a birthday present for Jackie. Unfortunately, Jackie was found in a compromising situation with a bunch of ladies (Joey jumping to conclusion) she took off in a huff with her cousin instead, just to make Jackie jealous. Now, her cousin has a crush on her, so imagine the rest. True feelings weren't realised till Jackie undertook an assignment to track down a mega rich Japanese businessman's daughter who has gone awol because she disapproves of her widowed father's choice for a step-mom. Jackie and Joey met up again on the cruise ship and all hell break loose. Lots of silly innuendos and gags all along the way when he finally found his target onboard the cruise ship and thought his job was done. Love the part when Jackie was looking at a sexy lady in her revealing swimsuit as his rumbling stomach interprets Big Mac (boobs) and chicken wings and drumsticks (arms and legs). In the meantime, everyone got involved in one way or another when they were caught up in an international heist/robbery led by Richard Norton as the baddie. A young Leon Lai played a professional gambler who's also good at using a deck of cards as his 'darts'. Lots of chop & smash (only in Jackie's style) with a good ending. The filming actually did happen onboard the cruise ship. Watch the out-take as Jackie and Richard rehearsed for their fighting sequence and an honest/candid interview with Richard Norton. He went on to make Mr Nice Guy with Jackie in Australia. |

Classic 1980's action movie
"City Hunter" is a classic 1980's Jackie Chan comedy action movie. It is based on the famous Japanese comic "City Hunter" by Tsukasa Hojo. That is why when you watch this movie, the characters names are Japanese. I like this movie a lot, one of my favorite movies. And it has a great cast: Joey Wang, Chingmy Yau, Eric Kot, Jan Lam, Leon Lai. |
