CJ7 The Animation (Blu-ray) (China Version)

Stephen Chow recently became the director of a public-listed company in Hong Kong and announced plans to make it his filmmaking empire. The first release was a spin-off animated film of his 2008 blockbuster CJ7. Here, Chow serves as the producer as he hands the rein to a crew led by My Life as McDull director Toe Yuen and King of Comedy writer Erica Li. The animation medium affords them more freedom to run wild with their creativity while retaining Chow's trademark "mo lei tau" humor. In fact, many of the live-action film's actors (such as the protagonist Xu Jiao) are welcomed back to voice their characters. Being Chow's first animated film, CJ7 also made headlines for getting acclaimed actress Cecilia Cheung to come out of retirement to sing the theme song with her son, Lucas.

Expanding upon the story of CJ7, the animated version continues the adventures of the adorable extraterrestrial with shape-shifting abilities. Poor construction site worker Ti brings a nifty "thing" home from the junkyard as a gift for his son, Dicky, not knowing that it's actually an alien creature. Christened "CJ7", the super-powered alien becomes the darling of the poverty-stricken but happy family. But trouble soon befalls them when Dicky's classmate Tarthead finds out about CJ7. Tarthead's greedy father abducts CJ7 to his laboratory, trying to extract its enormous power. Even though Ti and Dicky manage to rescue the critically depleted CJ7, an even bigger disaster awaits them, as Tarthead's father is unable to control the alien power, resulting in the lab's explosion, which threatens the very safety of Earth...
