YesAsia Editorial Description

Following well-received appearances in Iris and 71 - Into the Fire, Big Bang's T.O.P takes on his first leading film role in the action-packed espionage thriller Commitment. The K-pop superstar plays an intense North Korean agent sent on a secret mission to the South, while popular teenage actress Kim Yoo Jung (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) is the younger sister for whom he will go to all lengths to protect. Also co-starring Han Ye Ri (As One), Jo Sung Ha (Helpless) and Yoon Je Moon (Fists of Legend), Commitment marks the directorial debut of Park Hong Soo, who assisted on Jang Hoon's The Front Line and Secret Reunion.

North Korean youth Ri Myung Hoon (T.O.P) and his younger sister Hye In (Kim Yoo Jung) have been consigned to labor camp since their father (Park Sung Woong) was killed in the South and branded a traitor. To clear the black mark on his family, Myung Hoon accepts an offer from army officer Moon (Jo Sung Ha) to become a spy. After a long journey, he arrives in South Korea as a defector and takes on the cover of a high school student. Myung Hoon adapts to life in South Korea while carrying out Moon's secret orders. A major shift in the Pyongyang power struggle, however, leads to bloody fallouts in the South among agents from rival factions. Covers are blown and lives and loyalties upturned as Myung Hoon fights to complete his mission and save his sister.

Professional Review of "Commitment (2013) (DVD) (Standard Edition) (Japan Version)"

April 14, 2014

This professional review refers to Commitment (2013) (DVD) (2-Disc) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
A K-pop idol goes undercover in Commitment, an espionage thriller that marks the debut of director Park Hong Soo, who previously worked with Jang Hoon on his blockbusters The Front Line and Secret Reunion. The superstar in question is T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun) of Big Bang fame, who follows up his supporting roles in the recent Iris and 21 - Into the Fire with his first crack at headlining a film, taking on the role of a teenage North Korean agent who gets sent on a deadly mission to the South. With support coming from other top up and coming talent, including actresses Kim Yoo Jung (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) and Han Ye Ri (As One), the film is the latest in a line of North-South Korean dramas that focuses on young protagonists not even born during the early years of the conflict but caught up in its complexities and violence.

T.O.P plays Ri Myung Hoon, the film opening with him and his beloved younger sister Hye In (Kim Yoo Jung) stuck in a grim labour camp after their spy father was apparently killed in the South for traitorous behaviour. Desperate to win his sister her freedom, Myung Hoon enlists in an espionage program run by army officer Moon (Jo Sung Ha, Helpless) and is sent to the South, where he poses as a high school student while carrying out surveillance and assassination missions. A power struggle in the North sets different spy factions against each other, and Myung Hoon is tasked with tracking down a ruthless killer who has been knocking off other agents. Though he's told that doing this will save his sister, he meets a bullied schoolgirl with the same name (Han Ye Ri), and his growing feelings for her start to make things more complicated.

Commitment has obvious similarities with Jang Cheol Su's hit Secretly, Greatly and the two films certainly cover a lot of the same subject matter, with young, good looking actors making for rather unlikely spies and hitmen. Park Hong Soo does take a slightly different route, his film being a somewhat darker affair, with more in the way of plot and politics, recalling Ryoo Seung Wa's The Berlin File in its focus on rival spy teams and conspiracies. This works well, and though the film does occasionally get dragged down by its more melodramatic elements, Park shows restraint and keeps the relationship between Myung Hoon and the southern Hye In largely in the background. The film is definitely at its strongest when dealing with shadowy schemes and undercover work, and has an effectively grim and downbeat take on loyalty and nationalism. While there are a few moments of humour here and there, it's a weightier and more grounded affair than Secretly, Greatly and manages to convince as a serious spy thriller despite its teen idol vehicle premise.

Partly this is due to the fact that Park includes a fair amount of surprisingly bloody and brutal violence and a respectably high body count, with lots of beatings, stabbings, shootings and murders. The action and fight scenes are all well-handled, and made more effective by a ruthless script that's not afraid to kill off sympathetic characters from early on, adding a certain edge to the proceedings. T.O.P does a solid job in the lead role and is at least vaguely believable as a spy and highly skilled enforcer and executioner, spending most of the running time alternating between moody glaring and angry angst. The rest of the cast are similarly fine, and there's a semi-sweet chemistry between him and Han Ye Ri, with the veteran supporting players like Jo Sung Ha adding a touch of welcome grit and grizzle.

Though ultimately nothing ground-breaking, Commitment is a lot better than expected, and offers far more carnage and intrigue than the average K-pop idol showcase. It's a decent debut for Park Hong Soo and an entertaining spy thriller that's up there with, if not particularly different from most other recent genre entries.

This movie "Commitment" of Hong Kong version is a Region A disc, it cannot be played on a region free Blu-Ray player.

I've bought this movie version a while ago of Yesasia.com till i received it and wanted to watch it, i wasn't playing it on my region free Blu-Ray player. There was only a message showing in Chinese and English that its movie could not play cause its not a region A player.
Again, even my Blu-Ray disc player is a region free player.
I've bought a lot of movies of different regions and versions alike and played/watched it all. But this one, it doesn't want too :( . Too bad.

Fierce, tight plot and good action thriller Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Myung Hoon (Seung-hyeon Choi - T.O.P.), a young N Korean youth, is forced to become a defector agent in the South by an army officer handler Moon (Sung-ha Jo) due to Myung Hoon’s father being shot as a traitor in the South. Due to such treachery, Myung Hoon is slung in a labour camp prison with his sister Ye Ri (Yoo-jeong Kim), but travelling to the South and hiding low as surveillance spy assassin, Myung Hoon holds a chance of seeing his sister again. Myung Hoon is trained as a killer and after travelling to the South with a bogus name keeps in sparse contact with Moon. Myung Hoon is adopted into a S Korean ‘family’ having their own misdoings, and entered as a bogus high school student for cover. Aside to initial spy surveillance and killings, Myung Hoon is ordered by his N Korean handler to track down a merciless assassin, who is brutally killing other defector agents. To add complications Myung Hoon meets another Ye Ri (Hye-in Lee) at his high school, a bullied school student who wishes to become a dancer, who Myung Hoon protects fiercely at one point. Ye Ri reminds Myung Hoon of his sister and his angry and angst hardened feelings begin to change. But Ye Ri gets mixed up with Myung Hoon in a powerful espionage war after Ye Ri learns the chilling truth about Myung Hoon – his true identity. Not a clever school lad with bone breaking fighting skills, but a brutal N Korean assassin. But as power struggle worsens, handler Moon brings Myung Hoon’s kid sister to the South putting her life in dire jeopardy.

Violent bone breaking movies and close proximity gun silencer deaths are not everyone’s generic bag, but when a strong scripted and tightly paced movie like ‘Commitment’ appears its one certainly worth visiting. And ‘The Commitment’ is one rock solid action thriller. There has been some recent criticism about idol singers becoming actors, but in ‘Commitment’ T.O.P. convinced me well by his fighting choreography and strongly emotive agent, regarding his sister back home in the North, certainly top man for job. Great acting also from many of the cast including the sympathetic cop Je Moon (Jeong-min Cha), Hye-in’s Ye Ri and the N Korean handler Moon (Seong-ha Jo). Yoo-jeong is great but she has only a small number of scenes. I imagined a fairly decent action movie here, but it was far better than I anticipated. If you haven’t seen ‘Commitment’ yet, this gritty and vicious James Bond circa Daniel Craig espionage type is worth seeing.
