YesAsia Editorial Description

Maggie Cheung and Leon Lai light up the screen in Comrades, Almost a Love Story, an acclaimed drama from director Peter Chan (He's a Woman, She's a Man). Mainland immigrant Li Xiaojun (Leon Lai) arrives in Hong Kong in 1986 to build a better future. Hindered by language and customs, he comes to befriend Hong Kong girl Qiao Li (Maggie Cheung), a hard-working young woman who favors money over friends. Qiao Li is initially wary of becoming friends with the backwards Xiaojun, but the two find much more in common than they ever realized. They go from friends to casual lovers, but times and circumstances drive a wedge between them. Xiaojun returns to his Mainland fiancee (Kristy Yang), and Qiao Li takes up with a benevolent triad (Eric Tsang). But fate has much more in store for the star-crossed pair. Hong Kong changes and grows, and Xiaojun and Qiao do the same. People live and die, come and go, yet somehow Qiao Li and Xiaojun remain forever intertwined...

Showered with awards at the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards, Comrades, Almost a Love Story is a heartfelt drama about the love that grows and changes between two inextricably linked individuals. In total, the film took home nine Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Maggie Cheung took home Best Actress honors for her luminous starring performance, and Eric Tsang was rewarded with a Best Supporting Actor trophy. One of the most accomplished and rewarding dramas produced during the nineties, Comrades, Almost a Love Story is a thoughtful, touching portrait of Hong Kong and its unique individuals.

Professional Review of "Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996) (Blu-ray) (Remastered Edition) (Hong Kong Version)"

April 1, 2003

This professional review refers to Comrades, Almost a Love Story
Far too many punters insert the word "action" after "Hong Kong", and only define the territory's output by flying kicks and boiling lead; while many mainstream filmgoers might turn their nose up at Hong Kong films for exactly the same reason. Peter Chan's romance Comrades Almost a Love Story bucks all such trends, being equal to the greatest dramas from any country.

Maggie Cheung and Leon Lai feature as Mainlanders who have come to Hong Kong; she wants to get rich, and he is just happy enough getting by. The film is scored to the much-loved music of Chinese songstress Theresa Tang, and indeed her life and death become central to the events of the film.

This is one of the great Maggie Cheung performances, although that's a hard list to narrow down; but her determination to succeed however and wherever drives the film, and the POV shots from her ATM stick in your mind forever after when you're plugging in your PIN code and peering hopefully at the green LED readout.

The greater surprise is Leon Lai. Often accused of being a bland actor, here he shows again that he is capable of an impressive turn in the hands of an impressive director (in fact, for an actor much dismissed, he still manages to feature in three of the greatest Hong Kong films ever - Comrades, Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels and Johnnie To's A Hero Never Dies). He provides a counterbalance, someone who has come to Hong Kong not for himself, but to raise money for his marriage. Also look out for ex-pat Aussie Chris Doyle in a rare in front of the camera role as an English teacher. (The film was shot by Jingle Ma, who does a job worthy of Doyle himself.)

The search for the perfect life takes the characters far afield and over a few years, from China to Hong Kong to New York, from together to apart from that-would-be-telling; yet over this scope, the film is filled with so many moments of perfect intimacy that it stays with you forever.

a simple love story but very well directed. It has a good ending that is a flash back when the two first came to HK going their separate ways, but run into each other several times, indicating that these two were fated to be together.

A Classic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
To me, a great movie does not require great dialogue. The body language and facial expression tells it all in this movie. The script and soundtrack round off a perfect cinematic experience.

Oh yea, although the hard subtitle and lack of menu may turn off the more technically inclined, but to me that just brings back nostalgic feelings of the past.

Must watch with your loved one.
