YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Ching Siu Tung, Conman in Tokyo adds a couple of welcome twists to the gambling hero formula, including Cool's ability to throw sharp-edged cards courtesy of spiffy computer effects. Louis Koo makes a dashing gambling hero, and Nick Cheung is a fine comic foil. Co-starring Christy Chung, Conman in Tokyo is a welcome return to righteous gambling action!

Professional Review of "Conman In Tokyo (2000) (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)"
This professional review refers to Conman In Tokyo
Nick Cheung turns in a performance worthy of Stephen Chiau as the cocky, schlocky wanna-be god of gamblers, Jersy. No matter what you may think of him in other movies, Conman in Tokyo will make you a lot more tolerant. The film starts with a lurch as Jersey beats Turkey (afro-wigged Shaw Brothers stalwart, Lau Kar-leung) in a snooker duel, thrashes his gang single-handedly, and then launches into an insulting (and censored) song and dance number with his gang, before he sits down for dinner and has the corpulent Wong Tin-lam (Milkyway regular and producer Wong Jing's father) tell him that he's not a patch on legendary MIA cool-guy gambler, Cool (Louis Koo).
Director Ching Siu-tung (A Chinese Ghost Story) doesn't even pretend that the plot contrivances make sense, and he plays them as absurdist twists. How to get Jersy to Tokyo where he'll happen to have a late-night dinner in a restaurant owned by Cool-in-hiding? Have him take his girlfriend (classy trash played by Christy Chung, back in action after having a highly-publicized baby) to Japan for shopping. Have them stumble into the restaurant, have the Yakuza stumble in after them, have Cool disarm them all with hurled drink coasters. It's genius! It's senseless! It's two things in one. And one and one make ten in this movie. The top ten pop song in Ching Siu-tung's heart is allowed to sing here with the classy Yasuaki Kurata as the noble gambler, cards that fly like throwing stars, references to Japanese SM pornography (with Nick Cheung as the unwitting recipient), and a baddie whose idea of depravity is to ignore the sign that says, "Welcome to our ool. Notice there's no 'p' in it." Trash is served in gleeful heaping quantities. Nick Cheung is loud, brash and even has his own website (and does a parody of Leon Lai's Beijing Station video that is less a parody than a head-scratching remake), while Kristy Yeung is so loudmouthed she seems to be looking to replace Karen Mok. Her character wouldn't be out of place in a trailer park eating fried chicken with her fingers and wearing Prada. Louis Koo plays dignified with all the charm of the comatose, but he stirs to occasional life, when required. Ching Siu-tung is obsessed with Japan and he gets to work it out some more with this flick. Yasuaki Kurata is inexplicably appealing, and there's even a Duel to the Death type battle between Louis Koo and his comatose ex-girlfriend's nurses. Ching Siu-tung is confident in his ability to deliver the goods on time and his old school craftsmanship is such a welcome change from so many modern, underdeveloped action flicks that Conman in Tokyo comes off as twice the movie it really is. by Grady Hendrix |

Nick Cheung really made this movie funny, making stupid jokes here and there throughout the movie. At the same time there was a good storyline behind it. Louis Koo was really cute and did a great job portraying his character. Worth the money! |

Athena is my reason to buy this movie. but she had a little part in it. The other three took a big part.
But Overall I still like the movie, only in the beginning when Dicky try to swear in singing, I think that is too much, silly and not funny at all. |

Koo was great in this movie. He's cute in all scenes and simply makes you want to watch it over and over again for him. |

It's really just another typical action slash god of gambling movie. It's funny and Louis Koo is very cute. Athena could've done a better job and Christy was a good "dumb girlfriend" and the action sequences were pretty good. There were some nice twists to the plot. |
