Professional Review of "Crazy Romance (2019) (DVD) (Taiwan Version)"
This professional review refers to Crazy Romance (DVD) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)
The original Korean title of Crazy Romance roughly translates to "The Most Ordinary Romance." It feels like a more appropriately ironic title to this light romantic comedy considering that it depicts a relationship that is anything but normal. The feature directorial debut of Kim Han Gyul, Crazy Romance is a refreshingly mature story about two emotionally damaged people coming together in spite of a toxic work environment rife with gossip.
Sharing the screen for the first time since the 2003 drama Snowman, Kim Rae Won and Gong Hyo Jin lead the film as the unlikely couple. Kim plays Jae Hoon, an employee in a small advertising agency who's been drowning his sorrows in alcohol after being dumped by his fiancée – made all too easy with the drinking culture in typical Korean offices. He's been assigned to train Sun Young (Gong), a newcomer in the office who's also had her share of bad relationships. Kim Han Gyul doesn't build Jae Hoon and Sun Young's blossoming relationship with a series of contrived situations that keeps bringing them together. Instead, it all begins when Jae Hoon makes a rambling phone call to Sun Young during one of his drunken stupors. The film offers a sharp commentary on Korea's drinking culture, showing the characters relying on alcohol as an office team-building tool, temporary anti-depressant and something that allows them to let their emotional guards down. In one poignant scene, Sun Young even pretends to be drunk in order to express her true feelings. In fact, Crazy Romance isn't all that romantic for a film in its genre. Jae Hoon and Sun Young build their connection over talking about their respective romantic traumas, and Jae Hoon's attempts at winning over Sun Young tend to end in embarrassing fumbles. Kim and Gong don't play their respective characters as slick, attractive romcom protagonists who always know the right thing to say. They're both flawed characters who don't seem to be fit for each other at first glance – Jae Hoon is genuine but clumsy in various ways while Sun Young is cynical and stubborn – and the film feels down-to-earth because it takes its time to bring them together. Crazy Romance doesn't change the rules of the genre, but it is a mature, thoughtful and honest take on a familiar formula carried by two actors who know their way around the genre. The film isn't as much about courtship as it is a comical look at realistic emotional hurdles that make people hesitate to get involved. Feelings are often conveyed in nonverbal cues rather than show-stopping monologues. Those who are tired of the familiar genre tropes will be delighted by this "most ordinary" romantic comedy. by Kevin Ma |
