YesAsia Editorial Description

Horror master Kurosawa Kiyoshi returns to his pet genre with the mystery thriller Creepy, which premiered at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival. Based on a novel by Maekawa Yutaka, the skin-crawling psycho suspense recalls Kurosawa's earlier works like Pulse and Cure in its eerie atmosphere, frightening character studies and masterful build-up of converging mysteries. Having worked together in Mozu, Ryusei Wagon and Double Face, Nishijima Hidetoshi and Kagawa Teruyuki face off this time as a former detective and his Creepy next-door neighbor. The two are joined by the all-star cast of Takeuchi Yuko (The Inerasable), Kawaguchi Haruna (Say "I Love You"), Higashide Masahiro (Gonin Saga) and Fujino Ryoko (Solomon's Perjury).

Criminal psychology expert Takakura (Nishijima Hidetoshi) left the police force under unpleasant circumstances, but he has since started afresh by taking up a university teaching position and moving into a new home with wife Yasuko (Takeuchi Yuko). When his former colleague Nogami (Higashide Masahiro) asks him for help on a six-year-old missing persons case, Takakura obliges and looks for leads from the traumatized young Saki (Kawaguchi Haruna) whose entire family disappeared. Meanwhile, Yasuko tries to befriend the family next door, but they appear unreceptive except for the strange Nishino (Kagawa Teruyuki) who shields his wife and daughter (Fujino Ryoko) from outside contact and seems to change personality from one minute to the next.

Product Information

Takakura (Hidetoshi Nishijima), once a detective with the Police, now works at a university as a professor of criminal psychology. Although Takakura has completely distanced himself from police work, he cannot contain his curiosity when Nogami (Masahiro Higashide), his ex-colleague, asks for his advice and assistance for an unsolved case regarding a missing family. Takakura’s investigation gradually uncovers that the missing family had come under the influence of someone who deviously entered their lives, dominated them, and eventually killed them. What’s more, to Takakura’s surprise, this mysterious figure bears an uncanny likeness to his new neighbor Nishino (Teruyuki Kagawa). He and his wife (Yuko Takeuchi) cannot help but become suspicious of him. Will Takakura be able to free himself and his beloved wife from this terrifying trap? With its gripping suspense and riveting story, this film marks Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s return this genre representing the ultimate in such horrific thriller. It received its international premiere as Berlinale Special Gala at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

Kurosawa Kiyoshi's return to psycho horror
Based on the roles he plays, Nishijima Hidetoshi has to be the unhappiest man in Japanese cinema. In Mozu, he's an anguished public security officer trying to find the truth behind his wife and daughter's mysterious deaths. In Genome Hazard, he's an anguished framed man trying to find the truth behind his wife's mysterious death. In Ryusei Wagon, he's an anguished unemployed man whose wife mysteriously leaves him. In Double Face, he's an anguished undercover officer planted in the mob. In Strawberry Nights and the currently airing Crisis as well, he's an anguished officer.

The actor goes through yet more onscreen suffering in Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Creepy as anguished criminal psychology expert Takakura who leaves the police force after a costly mistake. While he's busy investigating a missing persons case out of interest, a rift begins to form between him and his wife Yasuko, played by Strawberry Nights co-star Takeuchi Yuko, due to the manipulation of sociopathic neighbor Nishino, played by Mozu, Ryusei Wagon and Double Face co-star Kagawa Teruyuki.

For those familiar with Nishijima's filmography, it's hard to not feel some sense of deja vu coming into Creepy. The safe familiarity of the casting, however, soon gives way to the ominously unsettling atmosphere of a Kurosawa Kiyoshi psycho horror. Recalling the serial killer mystery of Cure and Retribution, the self-fulfilling destructiveness of Penance and the derailing family drama of Tokyo Sonata, Creepy gets under the skin by patiently unfolding the converging mystery threats surrounding a missing family and a strange neighbor. There is obviously something very wrong with Nishino, and the audience gradually learns just how twisted and sinister the situation is as Takakura connects the dots and Yasuko gets pulled into the escalating terror.

Creepy is a case of playing to strengths. Having expanded his repertoire with mixed success in recent years, Kurosawa makes a welcome return to the hair-raising storytelling and style that he first made his name on. Nishijima demonstrates once again why he keeps getting these types of roles as he effectively essays a dangerously tense character that is just short of going over the edge. Meanwhile, no one is as good at going over the edge with nuanced overacting as Kagawa Teruyuki, who personifies creepiness as the worst neighbor ever. Takeuchi Yuko carries her character through the dramatic changes of a mild-mannered housewife who becomes the suspicious horror film heroine that walks herself into hell. Having made her debut splash in 2015's Solomon's Perjury, teen actress Fujino Ryoko shows even greater potential in her second outing as Nishino's supposed daughter, who somehow may be creepier than Nishino.
