  • What is the DVD Region Code?
  • DVDs are typically encoded to restrict their use to certain regions of the world. Specifically, DVDs are assigned a "Region Code" that allows the DVD to be played only on DVD players bearing the same code. For example, a DVD that is marked as "Region 1" is only playable on a Region 1 DVD player, and so on.

    Please make sure that the DVDs you wish to purchase are compatible with your DVD player. The DVD Region Code can usually be found on the back of the DVD package.

    1 Region 1 USA, Canada, U.S. Territories
    2 Region 2 Japan, Europe, South Africa, Greenland and the Middle East (including Egypt)
    3 Region 3 South East Asia (including Hong Kong, S. Korea and Taiwan)
    4 Region 4 Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
    5 Region 5 Eastern Europe (Russia and the former Soviet Union), the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Mongolia
    6 Region 6 China
    7 Region 7 Reserved
    8 Region 8 Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)
    0 or All Region All This designation indicates that the individual DVD can be played worldwide, i.e. in Regions 1 - 6 DVD players. However, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit
    Not Yet Confirmed Usually applicable only to as-yet-unreleased items (pre-releases) where the manufacturer has yet to confirm the Region Code.
