  • Is the sound quality of MP3 format better than that of CD?
  • No. MP3 is a compressed format which basically distills out some of the information from the CD format. MP3 format takes advantage of human ear's limitations to design the compression algorithm. For example:
    • The human ear cannot hear certain sounds.
    • Certain sounds are far more audible to human ears than others.
    • If two sounds are made simultaneously, we can only hear the louder one.

As such, certain parts of a song can be eliminated without significantly hurting the music quality. Well-known compression techniques are then used to shrink the file size of a song considerably, at least by a factor of 10. When you convert a song from a CD to MP3 format, the MP3 version does not sound exactly like the original but you will enjoy "near-CD" quality.
