  • What is the difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD?

  • Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are high-definition disc formats based on blue laser technology. They both offer high-definition video compatibility and higher space capacity than current generation DVDs. The formats were developed by competing groups and are backed by different major companies and film studios.

    Blu-ray has greater capacity per disc, while HD DVD offers greater flexibility with triple layer discs (in addition to single and double layer). Blu-ray stores video in 1080p format, which is more future proof than HD DVD's 1080i format; 1080p displays, however, are not very common right now.  Blu-ray has better copy protection.

    HD DVD was designed to be as similar to the DVD format as possible to ease production transition. This means HD DVD players and drives are currently significantly cheaper than Blu-ray players.
