  • What is Anamorphic widescreen, Full Screen, Letter-box?
  • Films are shot with high resolution and widescreen to be shown in movie theatres. When the film is being watched at home, the domestic TV may not be able to show the movies as it is in the theatres. Pictures may be compressed or stretched. The film industry has come up with several formats to convert wide screen movies so that they can be viewed on home TV's.

An Anamorphic DVD allows pictures to be re-stretched back to full resolution at full size. A DVD player has a built in function that allows it to re-stretch an Anamorphic movie out to full size to be shown on a wide screen TV.

Depending on the ration of the TV (4:3 / 16:9), a full screen determines how the movie will be stretched to fit the whole screen.

With Letter-boxing. The picture is shrunk to fit the whole thing in and black bars are added at the top and bottom to fill the gaps. If your TV is not wide enough to take an Anamorphic image, then the image will just be Letterboxed and look like any widescreen movie.
