YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on Masahito Soda's popular manga, Dance, Subaru! is the perfect starring vehicle for singer-actress Kuroki Meisa (Crows Zero) who brings her dancing background to the silver screen. The picture of model beauty and grace, Kuroki plays a tough-cookie ballerina who must overcome many obstacles to fulfill her dancing dreams. Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Lee Chi Ngai (Sleepless Town, Magic Kitchen), this inspirational dancing film wraps an affecting story of family, friendship, romance, and perseverance in soaring scenes of classical ballet and modern dance. The film co-stars heartthrob Hiraoka Yuta (Swing Girls), plus Korean actress Go Ara (Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea) and Sano Miku (Sunadokei) as friends and rival dancers. Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki, who sing the film's theme song, also make a special cameo appearance in Dance, Subaru!

Walking her own road from a young age, headstrong dancing prodigy Subaru (Kuroki Meisa) is determined to become a professional ballerina, a dream she carries both for herself and her late twin brother. Despite a tough childhood, Subaru grows as a dancer under the guidance of retired ballerina and cabaret club owner Isuzu (veteran actress Momoi Kaori). Shining through with her vibrant but undisciplined talent, she wins a coveted spot in a ballet production, and enters an international competition to vie for entry into the top ballet companies. But in a competitive world where friends are also foes, a very tough road lies ahead for Subaru.

This edition comes with making of, preview screening, premiere, unreleased scenes, and theatrical trailer.

Had some technical difficulties Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I bought this VCD version of the movie, and was a little skeptical about it as I have never owned a VCD. Also, it was my first time ordering from YesAsai at the time. Well, I have been scared away from VCDs despite their economical pricing.

I have a portable DVD player I knew would play VCDs and when I put in the movie for the first time there was no problem at the beginning. However, halfway through the movie (during a dance battle scene of all things) it began to act oddly. The image was distorted then the sound until it eventually froze. I took out the VCD and checked it for scratches or dust particles only to find it looking fine. I then proceeded to check my player and it was fine as well. It had been playing other DVDs just fine. I took the VCD to my computer and it did the same thing at around the same point in the movie (though not exact). Later, I tried to play another movie on the same player...and it no longer worked! Now I am afraid to try anything with that VCD. (After a couple months my player is working fine again, though)

Honestly, the only thing that kept me shopping at YesAsia again was that at I had purchased this VCD in a bulk order (I took advantage of the Popcorn Night). The DVDs I have watched thus far have all worked perfectly well. The service here has also been great thus far (I have made three more orders since). I simply stay away from the VCDs. I could have spoken up sooner or tried to return it but the hassle didn't seem worth it over less than nine bucks.

However, I am perhaps rewarding a bad product with more money! Because I enjoyed what I could see of the movie and will be buying the DVD instead. As soon as I get a Region 3 DVD player.....

For Dance Fans Only Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Dance, Subaru! lives up to its name with plenty of Subaru and plenty of dance, but somehow it seems less than the sum of its parts. While Kuroki Meisa does a commendable job as Subaru I couldn’t really feel her passion for dance, except as a child, during her last dance and a little during her 'bolero’. Most of her ballet comes across as wooden and unexceptional (the other cast members are forced to tell us that she’s actually amazing).

I think the main problem lies in the use of split shots for the dance scenes. Naturally, any movie with an actress in the role of a dancer is going to have difficulties convincing the audience the performer is always the actress, but Dance Subaru! seems to struggle more than usual (it’s quite obvious when it’s Meisa and when it’s not). I found it particularly frustrating when the film forgoes a full-body shot of a leap or jump (from an angle which would conceal the face) for the far less satisfying shot of only Subaru’s upper body (what is the point in a leap if we can’t even see the legs!?!).

Dance, Subaru! is based on a manga and I can see the characters are perhaps more fully fleshed out and explained in the original format but haven’t come across as well in the film adaptation. I think this is probably particularly true of the relationship between Subaru and the other two girls. Similarly, Subaru’s father's reaction to her decision to become a ballerina (and to dance in general) seems unlikely and a little too extreme, even given what happened in the past.

Fortunately there’s some eye-candy in the form of Hiraoka Yuta as the ‘guy friend’ but his character seems to have been thrown in ad-hock and doesn’t really have a purpose.

If you love dance-related movies (as I do) it’s probably worth your while watching this; otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. Sadly, it just doesn't quite have that 'extra something’ to bind all the parts together and make it great instead of average.

Technical Aspects:

English Subtitles: Excellent - I don't remember noticing any mistakes.
Picture Quality: Very Good
Sound Quality: Very Good
Special Features/Packaging: The special features are practically non-existent; a few photo gallery stills and two short trailers. The packaging seems not very well thought out; the images of the faces on the front cover appear to be collected randomly (not from the film) and are partially obscured on the DVD disc. The actual quality of the printing on the DVD and cover seems fine.
