The winner of the Special Grand Prix of the Jury at the 41st Montreal World Film Festival, Dear Etranger explores the complex dynamics of marriage, divorce, remarriage and parenthood. Directed by Mishima Yukiko (Night's Tightrope), the family drama is based on Naoki Prize-winning author Shigematsu Kiyoshi's 1996 novel Osanago Warera ni Umare. Asano Tadanobu, Tanaka Rena, Kudo Kankuro and Terajima Shinobu star in this acutely realistic drama depicting the pain, happiness, frustrations and alienation that arise in the forging and breakdown of familial bonds.

A few years after ending his first marriage, salaryman Tanaka Makoto (Asano Tadanobu) remarries Nanae (Tanaka Rena), who is also once divorced. Makoto tries to be a good stepfather to Nanae's two daughters while also keeping contact with his daughter, who lives with his ex-wife (Terajima Shinobu). This delicate balancing act called family is shaken when Nanae announces she is pregnant.
