YesAsia Editorial Description
After a successful 10th anniversary celebration, Koda Kumi continues her rise to be the new Japanese pop diva with several high-profile releases in February 2011. The biggest one of all is the release of her ninth studio album Dejavu. The single includes Koda's biggest hits in 2010 - Sukude, Sukide, Sukide and Lollipop - as well as her first 2011 single Pop Diva. As Koda Kumi steps into a new phase of her career with a new sound, Dejavu will not definitely feel like déjà vu for her listeners.

Solid album
Not as good as "Kingdom" but I think it's a step forward from "TRICK" and "UNIVERSE". Nothing of negative to say because all the tracks are good, I don't think there is a bad one, maybe I would like more Urban or Hip-Hop sound but I'm happy there is a lot of R&B. "Dejavu" reminds me a little of "grow into one" in the style and that's a good thing. ^^ |

Holy Smokes! My Diva is back! >_<
Holy Smokes! My Diva is back! >_<
I have to admit that I wasn't really feeling my girl's last few singles, but this album is simple amazing! There are so many genre's from R&B to kumi's classic dive hip-hop sound, and even her cutie bubble pop sound. Every aspects of kumi's signature sounds is within this album and it's refereshing to have all of this in one package. :)
Out of the non-promotional tracks, "Passing By" immediately caught my ear and was on repeat for a while before I got to the rest of the album. The piano melody is gorgeous and the thumping beat brings the perfect rhythm to this R&B ballad. I love the balance between english and japanese. It flows so well and whoever is collaborating with her has a handsome voice and I hope that if this is performed live, he will be there as well. ^^ "Okay" was also a track that caught my ear. It has a electronica dance melody with an intense R&B beat that I totally see in a club scene. Her vocals are so smooth in this piece and also mixes english and japanese will in a way that makes sense. I also love that "Anata dake ga" was included and not just "suki de x3" since it was my favorite song out of her recently released singles. :) The melodic tone in her voice is gorgeous... Also, the last track "I Don't Love You !??" is very interesting. The beat is very different from what we've heard from her before... I love it! >_< Over, a definite solid album as usual. Highly recommended :) |

She's done it again!
She's done it again!
Koda Kumi's albums are always amazing, but this is just on a level all its own.
The album opens with the prologue, which has a very antique, but futuristic feel to it. I guess that's a reason it's called Dejavu - combining past and present. The prologue actually flows into POP DIVA quite nicely. I was concerned how POP DIVA would fit on the album and still flow. I love the song, but it's completely different than what Koochan usually does. Lollipop's next, which does disappoint me. Off of Gossip Candy, I thought Inside Fishbowl was the best song, so I'm sad to see it omitted. I like Lollipop - it still sounds like it jumped off of her 4 hot wave single. Okay is a really nice R&B song that drags you back to her grow into one era. I love when she goes R&B, considering that's the style she started her career with. Aitakute is a really nice and soft ballad that flows nicely after the previous. Anyone else picture Osaka Castle with this song? Passing By' opens with a beautiful piano solo. There's a male in the background, that I do recognize, but I can't pinpoint who he is. AT THE WEEK END is such a fun song! Makes you want to go to downtown Tokyo or NYC when everyone that's into the car scene is together to have fun street racing through the city. The interlude makes you think of walking up to a large castle at night, staring up as you're about to enter. Then comes the cute song of the album: Melting! This song is adorable and makes you happy to listen to! I want to go to the park on a summer day when everyone's out! Next is a full version of Hey baby! from Crayon: Shin-chan. I'm glad this one has a full version, considering that minute that was out has over 50 plays in my iTunes. Choi Tashi Life sounds much like Lady Go! from MOON. That's not a bad thing! I love that song, so I love this one just as much! Then comes Anata Dake Ga, which has to be the most romantic song Koochan's ever done. This song will always sound like it belongs on her Kingdom album. It's so beautiful! Then is Sukide, sukide, sukide., which is another beautiful song, this one on a sadder note. Makes me cry almost every time. And Bambi is another fun summer song! This song is so bloody cute with a little rock and R&B vibe to it. Think show girl from TRICK! I Don't Love You!?? is very 90s R&B. I love 90s music! I hear this song and I can just picture everyone at the pool for summer. There's a reason it's called Dejavu! Though everything sounds familiar, it's still new and it's amazing! |
