Tsui Hark's 2010 blockbuster movie Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame has raised public interest in the eponymous historical figure. Similarly centered on the revered official during the reign of Empress Wu, Shen Duan Di Ren Jie is the fourth series of a popular TV franchise that began in 2004 with The Detective Di Ren Jie, which spawned follow-up series in 2006 and 2008. In 2010, writer-director Qian Yanqiu and the original cast led by Liang Guanhua teamed up once more. Carrying a hefty price tag of RMB30 million, the fourth series shifts the main setting to Dunhuang and other exotic locales in the Gobi Desert. A big chunk of the budget was spent on the visual effects and action scenes, but perhaps the most fascinating aspect is that the wise Di Ren Jie will develop an ambiguous romantic affair with his new partner-in-crime-solving, while taking on more intricate cases and exciting adventures!

Product Information

A fire had broken out in the Imperial workshop that specializes in making gold and silver wares for the Empress Wu Zetian. Two hundred craftsmen were killed along with a hundred thousand taels of gold and a million taels of silver destroyed. The Empress' minion Sha Erhan died in the fire as well. Initial findings by detective Di Renjie shocked everyone when he discovered that those craftsmen were first killed and then burned. It does look like the fire was not an accident, but that of a careful arsonist to steal the millions and thousands taels of gold and silver. An infuriated Empress Wu Zetian immediately signed a royal edict commanding detective Di Renjie to thoroughly investigate this case.

Meanwhile there was a reported case of 23 missing persons with all of whom are silver craftsmen from Luoyang City. Detective Di Renjie made the connection between the 2 cases and with this as the initial lead, started off the investigation with Li Yuanfang and Zeng Tai.

 Nice to watch Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The quality of the DVD is good and so is the acting of the film cast. The fights between the heroes of the story were superb, the mystery was intriguing and there were some funny moments too. But I cannot understand the need for the excessive & unnecessary 'deboning' events, where supply of blood was just too much. There was also a funny thing that became no longer funny after it was repeated so many times: Judge Di did not seem to be able to talk with other people without walking around. The group would then walk in rhythm, as if someone behind the camera instructed them to take left-right steps. Sometimes Judge Di would also detail out even things that were so clear or easy to guess, as if the film were for primary school students. If the excessive 'deboning' moments and prolonged group-walking events are edited, the series may consist of only 38 - 40 episodes. All in all, this DVD is nice to watch.

The US version published by Tai Sheng is better, because: the price cheaper, image quality sharper, color quality brighter, languages in Cantonese & Mandarine, subtitles in Chinese & English.

 Us version vs Taiwan version Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I like "Di Ren Jie" series and bought this Us version(by Tai Sheng) for my mom because it is in Cantonese. The image quality is excellent, 6 x dvd9 discs, the text/subtitle size is big, easy to read. I am happy with my purchase.
I also have the Taiwan version (by Horng En) 8 x dvd5 discs, each dvd5 contains 5 episodes (compressed), double price of the Tai Sheng version, but the image is much poorer. Especially the night scene is so terribly black out, I am very disappointed with the Horng En version. If you want to buy "Di Ren Jie 4" this drama, I recommend the US version: cheaper, sharper image& brighter color.
I wish Yeasia.com will soon carry "Di Ren Jie 1, 2, &3" in Cantonese language.
