YesAsia Editorial Description

This 1995 TVB drama was produced by Lau Ka Ho of Heart of Greed and Moonlight Resonance fame. Featuring location shooting in Malaysia and Mainland China, the 30-episode series is about several poor Chinese laborers sold to South Asia as slaves in the 1920s. It is significant for being the first collaboration between actors Frankie Lam and Kenix Kwok, who would get married in 2004 after a long and much-publicized relationship.

Wong (played by the charismatic Alex Man) meets brothers San (Frankie Lam) and Sui (Dominic Lam) in the slave camp in Indonesia. He is concerned with fighting for better benefits for Chinese laborers, and is split between his wife back home (Michelle Yim) and a new flame (Candy Law), while San falls in love with mail order bride (Kenix Kwok). Sui, on the other hand, is fed up with the impoverished life and will do anything to escape his lot...

Product Information

In 1920s, slave trade was still very popular. Kindhearted LEE CHEUNG WONG (Man Tsz Leung) was a poor worker living in Hong Kong then. He stood up for his friends WONG SHAN (Lam Man Lung) and WONG SHUI (Lam Ka Wa) and thus make enemy with his supervisor CHAN BO (Tai Chi Wai). Bo, in revenge, tricked WONG and sold him to Indonesia as a slave. Wong's wife Chan Sau LAN (Mai Suet) was determined to find her husband but fate kept them apart. LAN was sick and stuck in Singapore. Inevitably, the separate couple had found themselves new relationships though two hearts did beat as one for ages...

On the other hand, restrained SHAN met the "Mail Order Bride" LO SIU YIN (Kenix Kwok) up into the slavery camp. They both gave each other warm hands and love just grew spontaneously between them. Nevertheless, this unexpected relationship upset SHUI and made him feel resentful....

A worthy effort Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I got this TV series back in October ,2009. I saw a few episodes and I did not like it.
I thought it was too slow and too corny.

Almost a year later, I started watching it a bit more carefully and found it actually pretty good.
There are some nice old songs , some children's games and food that I have forgotten. I like the theme song too. This story has a bit of history weaved into it.I think it is nice .

Overall , I think it is a worthy effort. The characters that I like the best are the ones played by Candy Law and Frankie Lam.
